I would swap to being aware of hearing my own breathing any day from the nightmare of tinnitus which I suffer from.
Tinnitus is ringing in the ears after eardrum damage caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise
Its not so bad when you got plenty of background noise that kind of masks it during the day but when its quiet or you are trying to get to sleep I got something like the high pitched noise of a jet engine in my ear. Sometimes its verging on the unbearable...
I'm told I got hearing damage, the legacy of miss spent younger days and countless nights spent standing too near the speakers in clubs playing super loud house music!
Oh and theres no remedy apparently. Now I am paying the price..Yea I know, what a silly fucker..!
I too suffer from Tinnitus. I’ve had it since I was a child. I had horrible ear infections as an infant and tubes were put in my years, all the swelling of my ear drums, and the surgery damaged my ears and I’ve had a terrible ringing in the ears ever since.
As I’ve gotten older, it’s become much more noticeable, and after discovering loud music and live shows in highschool, it got really bad.
Like you, most the time it’s manageable and I really don’t notice it, but at night, it’s unbearable. I do sleep with a box fan on, a few feet from my head, and the white nosie really helps.
I think the advantage I have to most people with Tinnitus is I’ve had it for 35ish years and have become pretty use to it. It does bug the fuck out of me at times, but, I tend to not pay it too much mind, when I hear it I know I’ll eventually forget about it.
I've heard a white-noise generator can help masking the tinnitus.
I use a fan, and it helps a lot.
To Shina:
I wonder if hypnotism would work for that. A command to not hear that noise.
I’ve wondered that myself and plan on giving it a try. I hear hypnotism is great for chronic pain, I wonder if the same technique can be used for Tinnitus.
You might try one (!!!) noise canceling earplug.
I am not even kidding. Psychological research has shown that it helps some sufferers of tinnitus. The explanation seems to lie in the fact that the brain has to adapt to the new situation and this might cancel out the tinnitus.
Try it, not much to loose.

Wow emp, I’ll have to look into that. Thanks.
