right. i entered earnersforum after having read about it on a few other forums. i had the feeling that i was coming to a party where anyone important was just leaving
Ya know, a forum is kinda like a dance club. The owner starts it up hoping that it becomes "the place to be". A few people stumble across it and go "hey, this place is new. cool!". They invite some of their friends and because the community is small, the people who go there love it because they feel "it's ours".

Skip ahead a few months and word has spread big-time about this great new place. The regulars are still coming back, a lot of new people are coming every day and the owner is making good cash.

The owner can follow two paths - say "fuck it. more people = more cash" and then let any dipshit off street the in. The owner also thinks "this place is so popular, I don't have to do anything to it.". So the place starts falling apart, the regulars don't feel like it's theirs anymore and move on. The place is left a shell of what it was, and is populated by wannabes and noobs.

Or the owner can do the exact opposite. Keep the place fresh, keep out the riff-raff and love the regulars. Then everyone stays happy and the place stays popular for a long time.

I've seen many boards come and go through the years and they all seem to die for the same reasons - the ones I listed above.

And about Jon needing to post advice, biz knowledge, and tips... well, that isn't really necessary to keep the forum vibrant and interesting - after all the dance club owner doesn't have to know how to dance, he only has to know how to run the club properly.

Brilliant line and nice analogy.
