It probably doesnt help that i have OCD anyway but i have found myself on a neverending loop of stat checking. According to my history ive logged into google analytics 18 times today, ive also searched for my main keywords in the serps about 6-8 times each. I think i have issues :)

Its not like checking stuff often actually makes any difference to it, and its getting worse the more sites i get. Is this something all newbs do and you grow out of? Or am i destined to live the rest of my internet life in pie charts of vistor demographics?

You're not alone.
Trust.

You're definitely not alone. I broke my habit by getting too many stats to check in one day. If you make it a giant pain in the ass than you won't want to do it. Now I hate stats. :)

I think WickedFire has more industry people with ADD, ADHD, and some from of OCD than any other resource, blog or forum combined. No wonder we're also the most successful!! It's because we're fucking nuts and open about it!

(minus the new surge of imbeciles as of late).

I have a guaranteed cure for any obsessive checking habit ... but you probably won't like it.
  1. Get a nice, thick elastic band. Put it round your wrist like a bracelet. It should be a snug fit, but not tight so that it's uncomfortable to wear.
  2. Decide how many times you actually need to check your stats. Put the times for doing it into your calendar (ie I will only check my stats at 0900, 1300 and 1700 or whatever). Resolve NOT to check them outside those times. Set an alarm so you get a reminder to check them each time (Important, otherwise you'll keep checking your calendar to see when you're meant to check stats, which defeats the purpose somewhat)
  3. Now, each time you catch yourself about to check your stats outside the allotted time, stop, and pull the elastic band about 4-5 inches away from the underside of your wrist (the softest part), then let it go. If you do it right it leaves a little red mark.
There, told you that you wouldn't like it.

I did this to cure myself of obsessive checking of another forum which I was wasting days on and getting no benefit from. It worked within about 48 hours.

EDIT: For the record, I think I'm another ADHD casualty, although it wasn't being diagnosed when I was a kid, I was just "difficult". I blame my Grandma (who was otherwise wonderful) for making me obsessive compulsive though.

At the age of 2 she caught me about to eat a lump of dogshit, so to stop me from doing it again managed to imbue me with a fear of the stuff. To the point where for 5 years, I was unable to walk more than 50 yards down the road without checking my shoes.:uhoh2:

I check my stats every 30 minutes like a tard with statsremote.

I was very bad about stats, e-mail, the price of gold and other things that I just "had" to check multiple times daily (sometimes multiple times hourly during market hours.) The only cure for this that worked for me is to just fucking stop. It's like giving up smoking or any other forced habit. Just stop. Tally up the cost in time -- if you enjoy anything else in life than sitting in front of your computer working on those hemorrhoids you'll see after a week or so that the amount of time you spend on useless repetitive quasi-productive tasks is staggering. So just stop; jack off or read or play with your kids or do something else from which you get an actual benefit with that time.

What you need is a google analytics plugin for firefox. Theres an adsense one already, and as soon as analytics has one, Ill be using it.

Automate as many of your compulsions as possible.

I love when I come here and find that you guys are as fucked up as I am. lol I was a mad refresher at first and I now can make it all day... almost

Use your weaknesses as strengths against your weaknesses. That is exactly how I have solved that obsession for me.

I used to check my stats way too often but now I have replaced that habit with checking wickedfire way too often.

Haha. Protect your health and never start trading on stock or forex market :D You'll be watching the charts every minute (especcialy when you are on forex market). I broke my habit by quiting from the market.

Also, you can buy another monitor that does that for you and has analytics always opened.

I believe it...

I've got OCD pretty bad, thus the '...' at the end of every line I type... although, I can write proper when I force myself or if I'm doing site text for something that has to look professional, but it's kinda painful for me and takes a lot longer... which is why I enjoy posting on the few forums I do... it lets me relax and write in my own OCD-fueled style freely :)

I'm also a frequent stats checker...

it gets worse with the more sites you get. i've condensed all my stat checking down into the morning, but it still takes like an hour. i don't do it during the day when i have shit to do.

really you just have to get over it. don't check your stats for a fucking week (unless you have to for PPC) and see how much shit you get done and how unproductive stat checking is.
