Facebook Buys Instagram for $1B

First of all, props to the Instagram founders. 551 days later and they are cashing out for a a billski? Fucking epic.

This is clearly a defensive move by Facebook. Instagram won't change, it will be exactly the same. The thing is, why didn't facebook even try to add the filters and other effects to their own photo app? They should have atleast tried it out. If it failed, then buy Instagram, if it succeeds, Instagram becomes redundant.

I think the real issue here is that Facebook isn't cool anymore. Why the twitter outrage by Instagram users? Facebook isn't cool, just like how Youtube users thought Google wasn't cool.

That is the main issue FB is going to face from now on. Competitors will be creeping up every year now. Path is on the rise, what about Pair? You can't just keep buying your competitors, especially if you are a public company. How do you justify that move with dollars and cents to your shareholders? You can't.

Going public will be Facebook's downfall. Once they do that they won't have the free will to buy up smaller companies simply out of defense or to gain talented employees. Public companies often make those moves, but never on the scale of a billion dollars. I think FB knows this and that is why they are delaying going public.

I just hope up and coming social networks can hold their ground and not get acquired. That is obviously tough when Zuck is waving a billion dollar check in your face.

I'd imagine a lot of them have built the network just so Zuck will do exactly that.

he said that there are going to be extremely few if any such high profile aquisitions.

And don't forget that instagram is the most used pics sharing service on twitter, every time an user throws a link more traffic to a FB asset.
