Facebook is somewhere in the top 20 most popular websites on the Internet. It's used by about 85% of all college students.

But unlike Myspace, users can't modify how their profiles look. They cant even post pictures in their comments, and because of these restrictions there's no "facebook resource" sites.

So brainstorm with me a little.. is this an untapped market? or is it too restricted to work with? I thought about this for a while but couldnt come up with anything. The only "resource" site I found was a modified wordpress blog with ascii photos to post in comments.. and I doubt ascii art converts into sales.

I can only think of spamming ideas for facebook. Develop a facebook friend adder program. Like adder robot. Or blast out mass messages using the group feature. Or maybe a script to comment on all of your friends pages at once. And before you know facebook is whored out, just like myspace!

Facebook blows as far as advertising goes, I've tried it. I bought ad space at the top 5 die hard football universities and advertised a contest a week before the Super Bowl giving away free Super Bowl tickets. Had something like 15 clicks from the well over millions of impressions. Zero conversions. I've heard similar stories from advertisers, that FaceBook traffic is worse than Myspace. They may be used by 85% of the college kids out there, and a top 20 site on the internet, but they are quite possibly the worst traffic quality site out there.

There are no bulletins on facebook so spamming isnt as easy as on myspace. Another thing is that if you dont use your real name or picture, they will delete your account.

However, I have been trying to think of a way to take advantage of the "mini-feed." Basically, if there are any changes to your profile, those changes are listed on every single one of your friends home pages so there is some potential there.

Facebook is extremely restricted but there has to be some way to take advantage of such a targeted market. If anyone wants to discuss this further, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Not only that.. but IIRC there's options to only allow friend invites from members with .edu email addresses - this really screws things up.

You can register with any email you have, hotmail yahoo whatever. But you can only access certain networks with that email. ie. if I register with an email from my school, I can only connect to others that go to my university also.

The weird thing is, people are so used to not having spam on there that even if they do see a link to a site they tend to ignore it. I would have thought it would be the other way around but it seems like no one gives a shit about random urls on there. I tried posting my site url in some big groups but didnt get any traffic...myspace is a lot better for that.

You make money marketing to 40+ year old demographic with disposable income. You can't sell to facebook users cause thier liberal anti-commerical ideology rejects ads and sales pitches.

Facebook sucks ass.
