This is a terrific thread. I've received many of johnmatrix's remarks from others, but I'm optimistic about the future. The fact of the matter is, we keep every penny we make. Working for others - you keep what they decide to pay, in spite of the profits you make for the company. In my opinion, that's pathetic.

You could look at it in these terms to motivate you to self-employment:
My employer is buying my work/services for wholesale and reselling it to someone else for retail.

Agreed 100%. It's not for the faint of heart but if you have the skills and motivation, it's the best choice you can make.
