On the firing line
In a day of 140 characters, pokes and updates, print is dying. Nothing new. If you're like me, though, you still appreciate the feel of a real book, newspaper or magazine.

So... what's your favorite magazine?

Mine: National Geographic

The photography that NG is known for is so much clearer and vibrant on paper than any screen.

I follow individual writers. For example:

- I like Michael Lewis's stuff at Vanity Fair, but won't read the entire mag.

- I used to read A.J. Jacobs and Chuck Kosterman at Esquire, but won't read that mag, either.

- I read Roger Ebert's movie reviews, but won't read anything else at the Sun-Times.

- I like Robert Wright, Wendy Kaminer, Derek Thompson, and Conor Friedersdorf at The Atlantic, but rarely find time to read the entire pub.

- Along the same lines, I read LZ Granderson, Peter Bergen, and Bob Greene at CNN. I read Glenn Greenwald at the Guardian, Megan McArdle at The Daily Beast, and Wendy McElroy everywhere (for example, here, here, and here)

I approach magazines in the same way I pick films. Like most folks, I have no loyalty to the studios, but enjoy the work of certain directors. I couldn't care less about Universal's or Paramount's project calendar, but will see nearly every film made by Clint Eastwood.

Same with magazines.

I realize the above is a link dump. But for the one or two folks that find something interesting, it was worth it. :)

HBR - strange - there is usually something interesting in every issue - and it's HBR :-) Success Mag - Best? Probably the audio CDs ;). Some issues are better than others... The regular health etc aint that bad. Fortune - dig some of the future predig. issues - also, cheap when you sub :-) CLKeenan, JakeStratham etc. - what are the topics/specific that makes the different mag/writers worth you time? What are the subjects/topics/styles etc that makes them great??? Un-subbed from Time this year - couldn't find the the value even when it was dirt cheap.

I hate using the enter key too.
