Why is it that you can't find a decent Filipino who knows Photoshop?

All the good designer are in India and well, they charge too much. So I go to hire a Filipino but apparently good design skills are not a priority over there because I have yet to find someone who doesn't completely suck. Seriously, if you're from the Philippines and you're reading this, you can make bank by simply learning Photoshop instead of SEO like all your friends and family.

Good luck bros and maybe I will be hiring you soon.

Photoshop is pretty CPU intensive and most people over there are still rockin the pentium 4

Filipino media exposure is a lot more insulated than India. All they do is karaoke.

They only watch Filipino movies listen to Filipino music and do Filipino graphic design.

I'm more annoyed with their 'head in sand' avoidance issues when they can't deliver.

That's funny, I've never found a good designer in India. Personally if I had to choose I would prefer not to deal with the retards in India who call me sir after every sentence and don't know how to speak English.

The same reason I can't find a decent Hungarian who knows how to make hamburgers?

You pickin up what I'm layin down?

It's a cultural thing... I had these issues with many other countries as well. For instance, look at popular .ph sites (not too hard to find the top ones), look at the designs... If the top Filipino sites look like that, what else do you expect from them?

Also, many less developed countries still go by old US "rule" that the page should have as little graphic elements as possible due to large webpage sizes and load time. In some parts, people still enjoy dial up speeds and don't want to wait for the pages to load. Thus, designers suck as they got used to minimal design elements.

From my experience, US got the best designers for US public. Just need to pay more for quality.

Oh you mean how they can't work for you today because their mother is in the hospital...or their sister...or their cousin?

Here's my 2 cents- I own a web design/dev outsourcing center in the Philippines.

These are all issues I hear, see, and people complain to me about.

1.) People want to much for to little. To many guru's out there spewing you can get a VA for $200 full time(160hrs a month).

What they meant to tell you is that a data entry person, and if they did find one for $200 they are in a province with shitty internet, and begging for a job.

They also forgot to tell you that soon as Joe blow comes along and offers them $300 they will make their work priority and yours gets done when they get to it.

2.) Most Freelancers in any third world country take on to many jobs. They overload themselves with work. They agree to multiple jobs at shitty pay to equal one good pay rate.

They also undercut the shit out of each other to get the job and then they pay for it later when they are getting killed trying to deliver.

3.) People hire a VA and expect them to be a jack of all trades.

Most VA's are good at one thing. Split up tasks and get someone who is good in one field. Don't hire a web designer and expect him to be great at answer your emails for clients, answer the phone, and code in PHP

I had a potential client come to me and he talked to my business partner. Her English is perfect and she's a senior level programmer which is rare.

He said I don't want to do anything in my business, but collect checks. I need 10 people just like your partner who can speak perfect english, senior level programmer, answer phone calls, emails, and everything else I can pull out of my ass.

This is crazy logic. If you've been to the Philippines you know it's hard enough to find perfect English speakers, but to get everything in one person- Good Luck.

Also, programmers want to program. They don't want to be your bitch, be bothered with dealing with your pain in the ass clients, or any of your other jobs. Let them do what they're good at.

Things I've learned in this business since I started.

To find a good VA that are loyal and good at what they do you have to be willing to pay the price.

Sure the point of having a VA is to save money, but is it going to kill you to spring for the extra $100-200 to get quality and loyalty over shit work? It would cost you a fortune in the US to get the same.

Get to know your VA. Find out what they like, what their hobbies are, and what makes them tick. When they do a good job use this information to reward them.

If they like music get them a itunes giftcard, if they are a movie buff than get them movie tickets and dinner for their significant other. This may sound like bullshit and you're thinking I just want to make money, but this shit goes a long way.

VA's are workers- Think back to when you had a job. Did you enjoy feeling appreciated or your boss just hammering you with work and telling you to get it done. If you treat them great when the next fucktard comes along and wants to offer them more, they will stay with you because they like you.

If you have a big operation and need lots of VA's you need to find a project manager. You don't have time to deal with bullshit, making sure people get shit done, and any problems that can come along with outsourcing. Hire someone to deal with this shit and take care of them.

By the way- I didn't write this assuming your being cheap. It's more to open peoples eyes to outsourcing and help people find a good VA.

The reason I moved to the Philippines to start my outsourcing business is because I went through a ton of headaches and seen a need to solve this problem.

I was one of the cheap fucks at one time lol. Once I got here it opened my eyes to everything I was doing wrong.

If anyone has any questions on hiring a VA feel free to ask away. I love this shit.

Oh you mean how they can't work for you today because their mother is in the hospital...or their sister...or their cousin?

Forgot about this one lol.

I've heard this one a million times. Emergencies aren't real emergencies in the Philippines.

Everything is an emergency. I was trying to get a cold caller on board for my offline business and the person had 3 emergencies in 3 days. Shit gets old man.

You can find good people, but it's much easier to get someone who is managed over a freelancer.

You know just like me it takes discipline to work at home, stay motivated and get shit done.

The Philippines is a laid back country and the culture is much different. In the US everyone is in a hurry, but here it's the opposite. People will talk to you and they take their time.

Without someone standing over their shoulder It's hard to get quality work. If I get a client that needs work I can't provide I either hire a person that works with me, or I outsource to friends with another outsourcing center.

Dealing with the endless excuses gets old quick.

Out of curiosity where are you getting the VA's?

My questions:

1. Do you recommend using screenshot software to keep track of your employees?

2. How often does the power really go out in the Philippines?

3. What is considered to be a competitive wage (in USD) for someone with basic to intermediate programming and design skills?

Wow...that’s a good business idea...Guess Filipinos are lacking Photoshop skills, I think I will go to the Philippines and offer Photoshop courses there. LOL!

Oh you mean how they can't work for you today because their mother is in the hospital...or their sister...or their cousin?

Let's not stereotype that please. As freelancer, I've felt like shit when I had to explain family problems for delay just because assholes use sensitive issues to avoid work.

1.) Yes I do. I don't use any because I have them in my office, but it's good to know if they are wasting your time and money. I'm actually looking into developing my own software to sell. I want something you can log in and see their screen why they are working(something similar to remote desktop).

I came across this software the other day My Team Monitor - Employee Monitoring Software
Looks pretty cool. Maybe worth checking out.

2.) If you're in the Provinces it can go out every now and then I'm told. I'm in Makati business district in Manila. So we have top notch internet and it never goes out. This is where all the BPO companies are.

3.) The price for that would be $800-1200. Someone like a PHP developer would run $1200-1800. These guys are really good. Just depends what you want and what programming language you're looking for.

In provinces it's much cheaper and you have to deal with all the power outages and the internet isn't the best.

Should sticky this.

Yes and why the fuck they just can't say that they're in over their head or can't deliver. Instead they tell you that they'll do it tomorrow and tomorrow and never follow through. Just say you can't do it lol. Instead you wait and get delayed.
