It is the result of effective marketing. Nothing more. And voters are the berry buyers.
When Obama stepped into a pile of goo by getting mixed up in the mosque argument, the Republicans immediately started salivating. When Joe Barton apologized to BP, the Democrats immediately started salivating.
Why? Because these are positioning mistakes to exploit. They run to the berry buyers, and say, "Look, he's a terrorist sympathizer." Or, "Look, they're in bed with Big Oil."
In every political election, winners are "chosen" by attacking the opposition, not by supporting issues.
The real shame is that stupid people are so easy to mislead. Good for marketers and good for politicians. (But I repeat myself.)
I think the US should withdraw from Iraq AND Afghanistan. Both crappy little countries that don't mean a damn in the grand scheme of things.
US troops should withdraw right back to the city of Tehran. With maybe a little of sightseeing in the Caucasus mountains. You know, checking to see if there are any nuke plants doing a little footsie here and there.
