It certainly isn't going the other direction. The brightest people I know have either decided not to procreate, or have at most 2 children. However, every idiot I went to high-school with has at least 3 children, and sometimes more.
Right. If everybody were intelligent and not buy any superficial things we'd all be living in caves, happy and contented
Plenty of intelligent people buy useless shit from Amazon every month (I'm one of them, though I am cutting it back).

So you're saying that: The smart people have decided not to bring forth an equally (or possibly greater) generation of intelligence upon the earth and, instead, ensure they grow old surrounded by idiots?
I don't think the fate of the gene pool is really a factor in most couple's decision making process when it comes to children...I'm not even saying it should be.
However, if I look at my FB friends list, the people I consider to be of above-average intelligence have reproduced at a below-average rate.
I'll say this though, the people who have the most kids generally seem to be happiest.
I think intelligence is inversely related to happiness.
It's a lot easier to be happy when you are mentally incapable of living anything beyond a superficial life.
