For Those of You with Children....

Kinds hard to take care of kids when you're high (or drunk)...

It's just not that responsible to be stoned when you are raising kids. Even if they are asleep, they can still wake up screaming at any point for whatever reason and you better be ready to handle it in case of emergency.

Basically when you have kids you stop putting yourself (and your fun) first and think about your kids first...

Changing and getting a bottle ready when you're buzzed is not fun. Didn't want to wake the wife, but basically you have to double check everything you do. Bottle for example if you're unsure cool it down some more. I don't even really drink, the kid just happened to wake up crying on the one day of the year that I might get a little buzzed (was trying out this caffeinated alcohol called Four Loko, I'm so low tolerance apparently that one can got me quite buzzed.)

Besides do you really want to wake up the next morning wondering why your kid has a diaper on his head, and the crib is covered in piss and shit from lack of a diaper?

I haven't had a clean car since I've had kids. It's always full of their stuff.

Also gave up Privacy.

Sleep (was awake last night with a teething kid!), a lot less booze (beer with dinner, no drinking to get buzzed/drunk.)

Other things - personal space, a clean house and the ability to go up the stairs without lifting my leg over a baby gate. The comments about my lack of flexibility are a bonus.

how old are you guys? Seems like a lot of people have kids on here. I don't plan on having kids till im like 25+ I wanna at least live a little.

I'm 34 and I have a 14 year old and a 12 year old, I think overall though if I hadn't have had kids so young and been forced to get my act together, I would be a total wreck by now. I've only just become T-Total and have been for nearly three months, but again, without kids I'd have no real reason to look after myself, so its definitely a positive move.

I have 3 girls. 11, 8, and 18 months. I had totally forgotten how much work babies are, but they're a lot of fun too. I think having kids builds an extraordinary level of patience as well as tolerance for the disgusting. ;) I was on vacation last week and we were waiting outside a restaurant to get seated when my 8 year old puked (without warning) right outside their front door.

Good times.

35 w/ a 12 year old

I gave up pretty much everything that I considered fun. If you're a good parent, you have to be responsible to an extent and I was far from that in my youth.

I strongly suggest people wait until 28 to have kids, you're still young enough to regress but old enough you never have to look back and second guess all of your decisions (travel, sucky job, right spouse, paycheck to paycheck, ...).

Basically when you have kids you stop putting yourself (and your fun) first and think about your kids first...

QFT ... and happy b-day

29 - 2 kids here...
Yeah, I never thought I'd give up anything, but things change once you have kids. :) You sleep less, do more things that take time (such as taking kids to school/daycare) and get less time to focus and get productive... I stopped smoking, at least around the kids, still have one every once in a while... Stopped cursing... Stopped hanging out with friends as much as I used to... Stopped watching movies, play games, music that has any sort of violent content, etc... Of course you don't have to, but kids pick up all the crap right away... However, now when I am used to a different life, I like it a lot better... Except the focus/sleep part + all the mess around the house that they make... But on the other hand you get a ton of interesting moments and experience that is priceless. :)

Least the two older girls can "semi-help" you with the youngest one. And I kind of doubt your 11 year old decides to start crawling under the tables at the restaurants. But yea we had those puke moments, even once I swore our child was possessed, must have shot his entire stomach content a good 5 or 6 feet accross the room.
