Is there a more affordable option to Vbulletin that compares in quality?

Or am I being ridiculous?

Speaking of ridiculous...

Any thoughts on their value relative to Vbulletin? I'm fine with spending the $$ as long as there is some advantage.

VB is the best by far.

phpbb, mybb, simplemachines, IPB. These are good. I don't see why should you go for paid forum software UNLESS you see that vbull has some features that other don't. But it does not seem the case here.
 
I used to recommend phpBB to people over VBulletin, but if I could go back I would have used VBulletin on my forums. No experience with the others though. On a side note - be very sure you know what you're getting into with a forum because they are a major pain in the ass to build a user base for. I would suggest throwing up a blog and waiting until the comment section is overflowing with participation before adding a forum.
 
i'd have recommended vbulletin up until they brought out vb4, now I wouldnt. IB who now own it are a bunch of pricks and they've ruined what was a good product. Now it's slow and full of bugs, and expensive. 3.x was awesome, but you cannot buy it anymore.

I'd recommend phpbb simply because of the base features and also the support/forums and addons for it are massive. Nothing else compares, for free.
 
I'd say vb + vbseo. If there is any chance that you have a crazy amount of success. There is a reason you pay for software - Support + Features.

Good points.

I guess my initial question should have been a little more involved.

What are the advantages to Vbull that give them reason to charge what they do? I obviously am familiar with forums in the sense that I use them, and EVERY SINGLE ONE I USE seems to be Vbull. Unarmed Gunman, why would you go back?

Yeah, VBull is pretty effing pricey. And I hate that support has to be paid for. That just seems like a Microsoft move... "Pay us to help us fix our product."

I have to spend some time on the phpbb site.

Yeah, I don't see why I should spend either, Super. But my concern is that I put all the effing work into it and get it going and blah blah blah, ONLY TO come back and think, WHY DID I NOT SPEND THE $300 or whatever to make the fixes to problems (problems I currently can't even imagine...) that much easier?

The truth is that I can't envision the problems that are running a forum. But I have enough experience online to realize it's nearly all damage control. Shit never works right out of the box.

I guess I'd like to know why Wickedfire is Vbull, as is all the others I tend to spend time on. Can't simply be aesthetics....

XenForo is being developed by two ex vB developers and one used be the lead developer. If you look at their community forum (XenForo Community) you'll notice that it's extremely active for only being a few months old. (It launched on July 28th)

They had a pretty big security flaw just a few months ago with FAQ.php showing database credentials.
