Fruit used to be better

Best fruit I ever had was in South east Asian, juicy and delicious all year round. mmm.

It could just be that you haven't the fruit in other countries (or from a really good farmer's market) .

No, I travel to both Asia and Europe. I also visit farmers markets during the summer in the US.

The mangoes and pineapples are a little better in the Philippines in my opinion. I also enjoy some fruit there that I can't even find fresh in the United States such as Lanzones.

I think part of the problem is we are used to everything being available all the time, rather than just what is local and seasonal. There's not much that grows naturally here (UK) this time of year. In the past, they would've just had preserved fruit but we demand fresh fruit all year round - either transported half-way around the world or grown with the aid of greenhouses and/or chemicals.

Can any of you get Blood Oranges? They used to be around when I was a kid, but now I only see em in Tropicana juice!

We don't get Trader Joes in Oz (at least, not that I'm aware of).
We do have some stores that specialize in organic produce, but they are so insanely expensive. I'm talking $8 for a kg (roughly 2lb) of fresh Granny Smith non-waxed apples. And if the most common variety of apples in the country is that expensive, you can imagine how much the rest of the fresh produce is.

In Melbourne, I also remember Prahran and the Queen Vic markets having really good stuff, but in Sydney, I'm yet to find a market that's got a decent range of resh produce. Mostly the markets I've found are basically well established flea markets.

Heh, I'm going for "worldwide trend." Recently I've been disgusetd by the quality of tangerines and oranges at pretty much all the supermarkets in my area (Southeast US), but I picked up some pre-packaged Sunkist florida oranges from Publix; they were selling them in six-packs, but the per-pound price was actually lower than the loose produce. They looked ridiculously bright and shiny, which I assumed was just a corporate fruit-man parlor trick, but goddamn those were some seriously good oranges.

Farmers markets are definitely the way to go, though. We used to head out to our local one they put up on Saturdays, and you could get just about anything you wanted at great quality for cheap.
