FTC Charges Online Marketers with Scamming Consumers out of Hundreds of Millions

So Canada = No but I'm sure everyone knew that already.

Anyone know how feasible or realistic getting an economic citizenship in Dominica or Kitts is? Seems like some people would already be on their way to getting to a safe place and switching everything over.

this complaint is interesting in that it talks about affiliates and the affiliates making their own pages, sounds like they are setting it up for more spin off cases.

Very true. Read the FTC site.

"The defendants allegedly contracted with affiliate marketers whose banner ads, pop-ups, sponsored search terms, and unsolicited e-mail led consumers to the defendants’ websites, and the defendants paid the affiliates for each consumer whose credit or debit card was charged."

Certainly looks like they are laying the foundation for collusion or worse. Sure sounds worse when they say affiliates were paid for each credit card charged. As if it were the affiliates doing something wrong. The affiliate wants the credit card charged - but not because it symbolizes a successful ploy - simply because that is what triggers the payout. Phrasing makes a big difference.

There is always a lot said in the exact words they choose.

Of course every industry is busy getting hit. I read an article about Oreck paying the FTC $750K for false marketing claims just earlier today. These types of actions are not new to marketers.

This weeks press releases attack telemarketers, precious metals scams, social networking, online gaming, etc.

I bet that they're not going to jail. All the FTC wants is $$$.

Willms be ok and so will every guy in that suit.

Fair point.. there might be one or two who get made an example out of, but yea, I guess it's just the money.

Moving to a "safe place" just so you can more easily scam people = complete fail in life

1% of people and 4% of corporate business types are psychopaths. For some reason I think the percentage is a little higher around here.

Internet marketing and real life should be kept separate like church and state who knew we could get in trouble.

??? I have never made any asinine remarks about the market being benevolent.
In closing, I am a die hard Libertarian, Ron Paul gives me wood and the credo I live by is Caveat emptor!

Ya i should have mentioned that I was not referring to you but to those always crying "less government interference with business" or even worse "no government interference with business" - like less government is the answer to everything business and market related. I'm also saying this to those that worship the Market like it's some kind of fucking oracle.

The market indeed does work things out. Were you paying attention at all when the rebill world basically got cut in half because of Visa/MCs new high risk rules?

I don't remember the market working itself out of the sub prime crisis. Unless you count being bailed out by the taxpayer as market forces!

That's because the government caused the subprime crisis you jackass, the government made laws forcing banks to lend to unqualified and less qualified borrowers so they could get a mortgage and own a home. Bush called that mess out in 2003 and was subsequently ignored.

New Agency Proposed to Oversee Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae - The New York Times

''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''

Hurr durr. The banks were given lemons by the Feds, and subsequently not long after, found a way to make lemonade with mortgage securities. Banks were not happy about the lending rule at first.

^^ Truth

It is amazing how many people quote the media verbatim and blame the "market" and think Government was the salvation.

Yup. Banks made people think they were more wealthy than they were. The sub prime crisis was a result of this. So it was actually the market working itself out. In FL houses that were over valued were cut back down to normal prices. This actually allowed people to afford them...

and it wasn't just bush.

2 others that called this years before it happened:

and of course:
