My 86 year old grandma was admitted to the hospital last night. Shes always been extremely spry, alert and active for her age. For 20 years the doctor has been trying to get her to agree to an extremely invasive surgery and for 20 years she has refused. They switched her meds last week which caused her to be admitted to the hospital last night vomiting (still responsive and cheerful although a bit groggy).

They scared her a bit and she agreed to the invasive surgery. This morning following the surgery they declared a code blue and asked us to sign a DNR.

Shes 86 for fuck sakes. She just wanted to enjoy her remaining days in the tropics and visiting family abroad. Not with tubes sticking out of her.

Fuck it all to hell and back.

Same thing happened to my grandma a couple years ago. 85 but was active and had the mind of someone in their 50's. Docs talked her into a "minor" surgery to clear up some of the blockage in one of her carotid arteries. She spent the last 3 months of her life dealing with multiple strokes caused by the change in blood flow to the brain thanks to that surgery.

Similar things have happened in my family.

I know that feels. Extremely frustrating and heartbreaking at the same time.

I'm right there with you man, fuck doctors.

My mom has ovarian cancer and between doctor's who told her the cancer was nothing (telling her to not get it checked out before we knew she had it), to giving her wrong prescriptions and her having chemical imbalance 'episodes' of passing out, and the high costs with impersonal care. Not sound gay either, but this wasn't cheap care, a lot of money was being thrown around and this is the kind of shit that was happening.

Even though some doctors are remarkable people and they're in a fucked system or whatever, I treat them all like shit now and I'm super rude.

The american medical system is a fucking joke, full of doctors frothing at the mouth to cut people open. Doesn't matter the age or the patient, you're pregnant? Yeah, pregnancy dangerous, c-section time! = one of the highest mother/baby mortality rates in the world.

That's why with our 2nd we chose to have the birth at home. Hospitals are scary places.

You need good health to go to a hospital.

Then there is also the fact that a lot of doctors suffer from god complex.

But let me make on thing clear, you would rather prefer a doctor who would do one operation too many than one operation to few.

It is a know fact in public healthcare that older patients do not receive the adequate care unless they have very vocal family. If an old and unknown patient comes into the hospital, a lot of doctors go by an unspoken code that they have lived long enough and that its not worth using those precious public resources on keeping them alive for some months/years longer.

Same thing happened to my grandmother a few years back. Mind was sharp as a fucking tack, and the surgery completely knocked her body out. She died a few months later.

Doctors get a tough rap because people usually only go to them when something bad is inevitably going to happen anyway, so people tend to kill the messenger. But yeah, if you're 86 and feeling like you're mentally 36, don't have major surgery. Just enjoy the days you have left as yourself instead of merely surviving the rest of your days as someone else.

At the end of her life, my Mother's "Doctors" decided to inject her with an experimental, FDA conditionally approved treatment against the express wishes of both her and my Father.

They hit her with (4) treatments in the last 72 hours of her life, even though there was ZERO chance of it having any effect on her lymphoma.

She had NO insurance (cancelled) and my Dad had almost exhausted his life savings keeping her alive through alt. therapies for over 13 YEARS. They knew this. They KNEW there was NO money.

Yet they jacked his bill up over $28,000.00 for those four treatments, and then sued him into bankruptcy when he told them to get fucked. True story, bros.

FUCK DOCTORS.

Holy crap, galacon.

Could those retards be even more ignorant?

And I thought I was one of the few who hated them.

Doctor haters unite!

^ Such a group would probably go viral on Facebook with all those stories.

OP, sorry for your dilemma.
People, brace yourselves for OvamaCare. Varak Ovama is fucking us.

Aww second that is really sad, I'm so sorry :(

Truly: FUCK DOCTORS

My mom is caring for my grandmother who has Alzheimers, despite being confused sometimes and not being fit to be on her own any more my grandmother is happy, active and in excellent shape. The woman worked on a farm her whole life, she would chop wood every morning for her stove!

My grandmothers doctor kept recommending that my mother put her on anti anxiety meds because Grandma wasn't sleeping enough. She'd go to sleep and then wake up 3 hours later ready to start the day, confused as to why it was still dark out. After a few months of this my mother finally agrees. She gets the prescription, gives it to her and grandma goes to bed. All seems fine, three days later Grandma doesn't come out of her room in the morning which is odd, she's an early riser. Mom goes to check on her, she is half on and half off the bed, fully awake, whimpering too weak to pull herself up.

Mom drives her to the hospital, they say she's fine, that she now has Parkinsons (because overnight she is now shaking violently.) Everyone acts like "you know this is just nature taking it's course, she is in her eighties." But it just seemed crazy that her health would decline that rapidly. My mother suspects the new medicine is to blame and when she gets home she calls the pharmacy 1-800 number, "Can you tell me ifthis medicine would do this to someone in their 80s?"

The man on the phone takes pity on my mother and tells her the most bone chilling back story about this medicine. He says that this medicine is what nursing homes give to dementia patients to keep them easy to manage, docile. He says that it weakens them very quickly and their health declines because they stop eating. He says what eventually happens is that they become too weak to swallow effectively and so they aspirate liquid when they are drinking, this brings pneumonia and they die. BASTARDS

He tells her not to stop the medication suddenly but to give her smaller and smaller doses every day for a week til she is off. He says stopping suddenly can induce stroke like symptoms. (HOLY FUCK) My grandmother improves every day and after the week she is back to her happy (neurotic) self, no shaking, no mobility issues. This medicine put her in diapers in three days. Mom has been letting her drink a glass of wine before bed, grandma loves it and it helps her sleep through the night.

Fuck doctors and fuck big pharma.

Shit I'm 29 and had $74k brain surgery in April that only helped for 8 weeks.

After surgery doc says nothing else to do but go to pain management and puts me on time release oxycontin and percocet.

There is 1 hospital here that does an experimental procedure (peripheral nerve stimulator) that is promising but I can't get a referral to it because my neuro has never heard of it, and it's at a different facility/hospital than him. I begged for a referral which he said he sent but I never heard anything else. Can't even get into the place that does them to see if it would help. Only reason I know about it is someone from support group got one.

No, you guys are conspiracy theorists...

This is why it is much safer to learn about health on the Internet, rather than going to doctors. You just have to start learning this things while you are still healthy or relatively healthy.

I truly feel bad for you Americans.

You pay the same taxes as us, except our taxes go to Healthcare, yours goes to the Military.

Our medical system sucks just as much as yours though, but at least you never have to bring your mastercard to the doctor's.

Here you can't even get diagnostic tests without insurance. When I have an MRI I have to wait 2 weeks to get it pre-authorized through my insurance or they'll refuse to pay the bill. If I didn't have insurance they wouldn't do the MRI without cash upfront. (actually if you don't have insurance you can qualify for charity that pays the bills)

You can go to a hospital emergency room, but you get a completely different type of care (and much huger bill) and you won't have the same results as if you're working with a neurologist who orders the scan and reviews it with you. ER doctors just want you out of there, no follow-up or long term care.

I was misdiagnosed and took immune-suppressing steroid treatment for something I didn't have until I finally went elsewhere for a second opinion. Wish I had the money back from all the shit I've paid for that didn't help.

And even with good insurance sometimes I have to wait 6 weeks to see a specialist like neurologist, neurosurgeon, ENT, etc.
