fuck this is frustrating

That's easy to say but when you got something that you're SURE is gonna hit it big. Its kinda difficult to sleep with it on a crappy server.

I thought the same thing on a project I was working on for the first half of last year. We knew that as soon as a certain event happened, our traffic would spike and we wouldn't know what to do. We started on a virtual account at Pair, moved to a dedicated server and then my boss was so paranoid about it that we added a cluster of 5 servers and a load balancer. We ended up doing about 200K uniques a day for almost two months and decided later that the single server setup could have easily handled that and maybe even the virtual server, although that may have been a stretch. Maybe 200K uniques a day isn't "huge" traffic, but it was a big jump from less than 100 a day we had been doing a couple months prior...not sure how much traffic you're estimating...

Contextual Ads are a tricky game. One of the sites in the footer of this message, SotanLIFE: Restaurants, Bars, Nightclubs, Theatre, Music and Movies in Minneapolis & St. Paul, when we launched that site we had it on a dedicated server as well, because we were so sure that it was going to be huge.... Yeah right. Traffic is not horrible, but it didn't take off like I thought. And even with thousands of AdSense impressions each day, CTR is horse shit, seriously, less than about $4.00 a day and close to 4000 impressions (on average). Then I have other sites which make several times that, with much less impressions. It all depends.

@Shaggz: Maybe AdSense wasn't the way to go to monetize your system. Could it have been monitized in other ways? Perhaps a free version of whatever the was, and a more "premium" or paid server? Or perhaps the answer lays in creating partnerships with more traditional marketing agencies on more of a CPM basis.

how do you guys make money

shit this month I made a whopping 400$ profit so far. Ballin'...

shit's so frustrating it seems like 99% of what I try ends up in total failure and I lose chunks of money.

these fuckers need to start buying/clicking

I'd take a kick to the nuts (but not too hard) to be making $400 profit right now. It seems I can either:
a) get lots of cheap traffic to a cheap offer that pays little and barely converts, so I make nothing
b) get mediocre traffic to my own landing page which barely sends any traffic to the merchant, so I make nothing
c) get shit traffic directly to the merchants landing page because I refuse to pay $3 a click to beat adwords QS or competing ads that have been doing this longer, so I make nothing

Keep trying... keep trying... writing a blog with adsense on it was easy compared to this crap.

Fuck you, where do the "pros" come from? definately not from asshats like yourself. 99% of the pros failed at everything for months and months until finding something that works. Its just the way it fucking works.

int_josh, stfu and keep plugging away and stop asking suckass questions like "how do you guys do it"

fuck yeh :rasta:

I was *so* close to going ahead and getting a second server cuz i just KNEW i'd need 2 of them within a week of my viral shit taking off. I had everything over-engineered and ready to be scaled to hell. I even checked with the hosting company about a load balancer. LOL. Looking back, i was such a dipshit for thinking it was that easy.

Big things need millions of dollars of financing.

DON'T OVER ENGINEER! Time and time again I hear people say this programing language is better and I have this great scalable system that I put all this time into. FUCK THAT!@ Build simple fast things that do the specific job at hand. Then if they are in PHP you can glue them together later.

The biggest mistake I made when starting is I was going to build a big system that was going to make me millions, I spent a year on it making and then , NOTHING. Made me like 30$/day, totally worthless for the time. I could have made more working the line at Micky D's.

Build something by hand and have success with it FIRST. By HAND you hear me. If you're going to use scraped content and certain quality of keywords go and make 10 of those sites by hand. And see what happens cause I see time and time again people build elaborate systems based on something that just doesn't work. Often time it's one more little piece that would make all the difference. And if you stuck with it manually FIRST you probably would have found them rather than investing all your time into an elaborate system.

Once you know 100% something is going to work from testing. Start building small parts of it and get them going. Then build the next part, then glue them all together.

couldn't agree more with this

often times what you think is a fucking fabulous idea ends up being a money pit. Lots of ppl use this as an excuse to sit with a thumb in their ass. Yeah it won't work, why bother, most businesses fail.

Well I got an answer to those people - FUCK YOU.

I will fail 9 times, but on 10's I will succeed and do it big, have fun waving at my yacht with 5 playboy bunnies from your huyndai elantra, fuckface

kfc founder failed 1009 times before he got it. And he got it big.

Most people fail to realize that failure and frustration and setbacks and just general pounding in any area is a groundwork for success. Success is 99% mental, the rest is just logistics. Those who fail and are able to persist through and focus on what they want, will get it 100% of the time, no exception.

If your success comes without failure, it will collapse at first sign of difficulty.
