1) The medicare payroll tax goes from 1.45% to 2.35% for people making more than $200,000 per year or couples making more than $250,000 per year. That tax will also apply to capital gains and unearned income. There will also be a 10% tax increase on indoor tanning services.
2) Starting 2014 everybody has to buy health insurance, if you are within 100% - 400% of the poverty line ($44,000 for a single person, $88,000 for a family of 4) and you buy your health insurance on one of the exchanges that are going to be setup you get a subsidy based on how much you make. The subsidies are setup that nobody pays more than 3% - 10% of their income on health insurance. If you don't buy health insurance you get a penalty of $695 per year up to a maximum of $2,085 per family or 2.5% of household income (whichever is greater). The penalty will be phased in gradually over three years, starting with $95 in 2014.

We needed health care reform but not this mess of a bill. I am all for universal health care, especially taking people with pre-existing conditions because I am one of them. When I was working, I was fine and able to pay whatever health insurance costs came up. But after I had 2 stomach surgeries and I am still stuck with a damn ileostomy, I can't get shit for health insurance being self-employed. I self-insure myself and even with constant medical supplies, prescriptions and doctor visits, I still paid less then $400 a month last year.
Anyways, we need something to help people who have had serious problems. Thank god I am able to stay somewhat healthy or the hospital bills would have made me bankrupt by now.
Also, I am sick of the Democrats saying that the bill is not really perfect but that they will fix it later. Why not take the time and iron it out now? The only reason it was pushed through so fast was because they are scared they are going to lose their seats, and now they just sealed their fate.

that's one big positive to the HCR....pre-existing conditions will be covered. Healthy people in the long run cost less.

it's easy to talk real big when you're sitting in the highest tax bracket AND ARE HEALTHY.
It's real different when you realize many before you who had a lot more lost it all due to unlucky health circumstances.
One thing missed in this dialog is what the health care bill does for those with an entrepreneurial spirit. Many people in this country are shackled to their jobs due to the group medical care it provides, knowing that they will be charged up the wazoo if they quit and have to buy it on the open market. Some of them have preexisting conditions (or a family member does), making it impossible for them to buy any insurance at all. So they remain, year after year, trapped in their cubicles with no way out.
Point being, the mandate to cover yourself creates a small limitation in your freedoms. But... the freedoms the new system will create are different and so much better.
No more worries that insurance can't be purchased. No more worries that it will be canceled on you once you get sick. Strivers can quit their jobs and strike out on their own, knowing coverage they can afford is out there.
I understand this is insufficient for many of you libertarian ballers. But in real life you have to give something up to get something else. And the weight of the system's dysfunction is crushing and had to be addressed. I understand that many of you don't care about poor people and wish they would simply drop dead. But the system now makes you his keeper anyway, as medical care costs are shifted onto you. You don't like it? Tough! It works this way already.
To his credit, John McCain had previously endorsed unshackling health insurance from employment. I think this aspect should have been made stronger in the bill.
As the bill is meant to put the country on a different path, in time it will be adjusted to fix the parts that work less well. The only way to see what parts work well is to just implement it (like affiliate marketing).

I wouldn't say people hate the poor. I think people hate the lazy. I don't mind paying my taxes and getting benefits like schools, roads, etc. I also don't mind if a little bit of that goes to a person who is trying, meaning someone who is at least working 40 hours a week. Who cares if it is at McDonald's, at least they are trying. It is the people who live off of welfare by having more babies and never working that piss people off. That is just how I see it.
