*********************************SPOILER ALERT*********************************

Winter is coming

There are five books published, out of a planned seven. The upcoming TV season will cover the last 1/3 of A Storm of Swords and potentially portions of the following two books (which are set concurrently).

* A Game of Thrones (1996)
* A Clash of Kings (1998)
* A Storm of Swords (2000)
* A Feast for Crows (2005)
* A Dance with Dragons (2011)
* The Winds of Winter (future, probably early 2015)
* A Dream of Spring (future)

Additionally, there are three novellas in the Tales of Dunk & Egg series that takes place 90 years before the events of AGOT. It hasn't been revealed how many stories there are planned in this series. I've seen a range from 6 to 12.

* The Hedge Knight (1998)
* The Sworn Sword (2003)
* The Mystery Knight (2010)

There was also a standalone (for now) novella titled The Princess And The Queen, published last year, that is set 200 years before the events of AGOT.

I'm torn as I watch the HBO series - is it worth it to read any books before watching?

The books are probably 60-70% as good as The Wheel of Time. It feels like the author doesn't know how to write epic scenes, big battles, dramatic deaths of characters so he just doesn't and has it all happen in the background.

He introduces characters, declares them to be supremely infinite at certain things, then one book later they get obliterated in the night by retards. That being said some of those characters are fucking annoying/useless and boring and THANK GOD they get killed.

I got up to the start of 4th book where that chick is wondering around looking for that other chick and saying the same line every two seconds I started thinking to myself WHY THE FUCK AM I READING THIS GARBAGE and put it down.

You'll get more entertainment out of your local newspaper.

Plus the whole way they handle the Gods is really annoying. There are 7 gods, no 1 god, no wait 2 gods. Let me tell you if I lived on that planet I'd be praying to the God that goes around resurrecting people every two seconds cause he's bored.
WTF...

I finished WoT 6 months ago after starting at 14 and rereading once through just to get back up to speed and that shit is hard to read through. It reminded me of Dragon BallZ in terms of power source and tests of strength.

While I enjoyed it, I don't recommend it to many people but I think everyone should read GoT.
Wheel of Time got so fucking redundant after like 8 books I just up and quit reading it. Not a huge Sanderson fan either, can't imagine he finished it like a boss.

If you're reading this thread and haven't started reading GoT, don't. Huge fucking time suck, so addictive.

I mean he was the perfect asshole which is what made him such a good villain, I wish it hadn't happened yet. Same thing with the other targaryn whatever his name was.

Wow. Did not see that coming.

Remember when Joffrey was chopping things on the wedding table with his Valerian steel sword - did he chop up the history book that his wee uncle gave him?

A more substantial question: How is that mean guy (who tortures greyjoy) is related to Jon Snow?
