Gangs in the US (vid)

My ex girlfriend is a young adult psychologist that deals with troubled teens. She talked to inner city gang members from Bankhead (one of the worst neighborhoods in America), etc. a lot.

Imagine a tiny little mid-20s white girl from Alpharetta (affluent suburb of Atlanta) sitting in a room alone with these fuckers.

But she wasn't scared...because they're just kids. Sure, they show off for their friends and act all hard and do insane, violent things at times but only because they believe they have to. They think they're stuck in that life.

But she'd always tell me that most would tell her - after bawling their eyes out for half an hour - that they wanted nothing more than to live in a good family, go to a good school, and live a good life. But they believe they can't have that, so they do this.

Most of these kids are just victims of growing up in a shitty place to shitty parents and they stay in shitty places and become shitty parents, thus repeating the cycle ad nauseum.

In b4 privileged kids act all holier-than-thou about how much smarter they are than gang members.

I grew up around that lifestyle in NYC (I was the one they beat up whenever I ran home from school a different way each day and they happened to catch me) because my parents did their best to keep me out of it and that series is actually filmed about 5 miles from me in a part of town that I only drive through for Jamaican food twice a year (Riviera Beach, FL). lol

Honest truth: The kids are scarier than the adults. By the time they've become an adult they've calmed down and just want to survive, but the kids think they're invincible.

FWIW: Whenever some middle class woman tries telling me how hard her life is because she's a single mom and I just look at her. For years AFTER moving out of the hood I was still reluctant to wear red. The shit I've seen go down because someone wore a red shirt... Man...

fuck this ghetto rap culture shit. let's get some fucking rock n roll up in this bitch!

I don't get it West Palm Beach is pretty sweet I wouldn't have guessed such violent creatures to be lurking about in West Palm Beach

You can go your whole life here and avoid the area those guys live and hang out in and they rarely leave since the police DO profile based off of what you wear.

Basically it's socially un-cool to be, act, or strive to be intelligent in their culture.
this. a kid in an inner city school will get made fun of for being smart in class. "yo dawg u so smart, why can't i be like you man. (whole class laughs)."

My primary motivation for attaining wealth lies in being able to afford a degree of separation from the mass of humanity for myself and the people I care about.

Nothing in this video is new, nor does it have anything to do with race. Human beings are vicious animals driven by the basest desires.

No. The military shouldn't be used as kindergarten for people that don't want to be there.

Right. It should be used to defend citizens. The personal development benefits that men 18-22 get from service happens even to those who don't "choose" to go. The reality is that after a few generations of conscription, young black men in the ghetto will be looking forward to being drafted the same way some look forward to go to prison right now.

The last thing I'd want in a mission-critical situation is to have to rely on some dipshit that was pushed into that situation against his will.
Obviously psychometric exams will decide to which units everybody will go.

All that would do is punish the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines that do their job professionally and well.
How so? After a few weeks in boot camp, tough bad ass gangsters, with tattoos up their necks, will be broken down to nothing. Than they get rebuilt just like the rest of them. Obviously there will be some crazies that you cant take the jungle out of, but there are crazies in the military now too.

Retention of these high-caliper individuals would plummet and all you'd have left were the dregs.

How so? There will actually be more high caliber soldiers. Think about the drive that many young black kids have to be the best basketball, or football players, but sadly they have a 1 in a million shot, and once that is realized they are left to slangin rocks. Now they will use the same drive to be the best snipers, or machine gunners, or compete on how many miles they can march with 100 pounds on their backs, and they will be disciplined so when they come back to civilian life they will be normal people and productive members of society.

It`s funny when I meet Americans who say stuff to me like "You traveled to Lebanon? You went to Gaza? You went to Jakarta? Are you insane?" America`s big cities are some of the most dangerous places in the world - if you end up in the wrong neighbourhood. Or bump into the wrong person in a nightclub.

A couple thoughts from someone who actually just watched the entire thing:

Gun laws are not the problem, drug laws are. The entire gang culture depends on them.

Also, lol at all of the "inb4" comments. Thanks for clarifying, otherwise we would have thought that you thought your opinion was actually going to be met with no opposition and the entire forum would be in agreement with you.

I watched this debate last week, it's really insightful since it deals with this very problem

Plenty of places like that in Florida, affluent and ghetto not too far from each other. It can literally be a railroad track that separates the richest areas from crack addicts walking around.

Marginalize entire communities and that's what you get in a country where weapons and drugs are as easy to obtain as buying a candy.

Thousands of judges Dredd will be needed in the near future to recover those areas.

When I did my behavior psych internship at Jackson State Pen. during college, this was generally the story I heard/saw/was told by the younger inmates that had been in gangs. Many of them were coming out of areas like Flint and Detroit. It was incredibly sad.

What a coincidence - I also spent some time in Jackson Penitentiary. And studied behavioral psychology while I was there too lol.

Not that it will change anybody's mind, but this is primarily a cultural issue, not a racial issue.

That's 100% truth. Anyone living in that shit doesn't want to be there, but they do feel like they're stuck there. That's why it pisses me off when I see some middle class kid trying to emulate what they see, but have no fucking clue what it's really about and how much it sucks to actually be down in it.

Weird. If you don't mind my asking, where did you do your schooling. I started out at Iowa and then transferred back home to Western to finish the rest of my undergrad, primarily to work with Dybek for my English/Creative Writing major and Malott and Poling for my Psych major.

And yes, it is primarily a cultural thing from what I've seen. It's the same type of thing you find in the predominantly white "meth/trailer park" communities. That's what the kids learn because that's all their parents and their neighbors let them know. For the ones that do make it out and make a better life, it's usually because they had at least one parent fighting like hell to make them see they didn't have to succumb to the same bullshit that was all around them.

But you're right, good luck changing anyone's mind.

At least in the 80's and 90's you had hiphop artists speaking out against this sort of stuff but nowadays it does nothing but glamorize it from what I've seen. These guys seem like they have zero role models to give them any sort of hope to do more than act like scum.
