The author is 100% correct about everything. Entitled, deluded, frustrated, etc...all true about this crowd. IMO, most of the blame goes to the baby boomers who instilled this crap into their heads they they were somehow special and were going to live lives the Dos Equis guy would be jealous of.

Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy | Wait But Why

Jason Calacanis nails it:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpuAggEyHfk]Message to Gen Y People - YouTube[/ame]

Oh look, it's this thread again.

And no Calacanis doesn't nail it. He spews a lot of bullshit in that clip is what he does. I couldn't even listen beyond the 1:26 mark.

His message is fine, but when you use things like "I've done a pretty scientific survey..." the rest of your message is lost. Why? Because there is no such thing as pretty scientific. It either is, or it isn't. There is no in between. You've either followed the scientific method and controlled for variables and confounds or you haven't. Simple as that. If you have, you may have a valid result, if you haven't you may have some anecdotal evidence, but odds are that you don't even have that. You probably just have manipulated bullshit.

Then he goes on to talk about 70-80 percent of Gen Y on anti-depressants and/or have no motivation. If his survey was scientific, he wouldn't have a 10% range on this. Also, motivation would have to be very narrowly defined to have any scientific meaning what-so-ever, and even then it doesn't mean anything because his definition of motivation will not be what other "scientists" use as the definition of motivation.

So all he's actually saying is that he's guessing this is the case, even though there is no basis in reality for his claims.

When you back up your claims with utter bullshit, it no longer matters how on point your message may be. You've already lost anyone with the tiniest bit of critical thinking ability.

As I said the last time this thread came up about a week ago, when you're only painting with broad strokes everything looks like shit.

As to the article, I always put a ton of stock into articles where the author can't even be bothered to put their name to it. If you have a point to make and you feel it's a valid point, stand behind it. If you can't do that, it's probably not worth my time to listen to you because odds are if I looked at your life in the specific area your message is in it wouldn't stand up to scrutiny.

This article would be completely accurate if it took place in an alternate universe in which Gen Y consisted of nothing but spoiled, white, upper-middle class, idealistic white girls.

At best, this article accurately describes a small fraction of Gen Y in the USA. It doesn't take into account the hardworking and determined younger adults who buried themselves in debt to go through college (thanks to record high tuition prices), graduated, and can't find a fucking job thanks to a shitty job market. I know many people who are in this exact predicament. They ain't lazy. Things really do fucking suck right now. It's a harsh reality.

Or what about the fraction of Gen Y who never went through college because they saw their peers graduate with nothing to show but shit tons of debt? So they work manual labor type gigs as a source of income, and kind of just stay low-key.

Or what about the members of Gen Y who don't want to even fucking play the game in the first place? What about the ones who don't see a typical career-oriented American lifestyle as something to aspire to? Produce, produce produce, slave for raise, slave for raise, slave for raise, TV, TV, TV, football, football, football, bars, bars, bars, kids, kids, kids, save for university, etc... Just doesn't appeal to many younger adults.

And no, I don't have research or statistics to back any of this up. Just my own two eyes.

The game sucks, and it doesn't have to. I think Gen Y is beginning to realize this.

I'm Gen Y. What this article describes is the downfall of the upper middle class spoiled white kid.

The people I see out here are all hustling. Struggling. Some are breaking out and succeeding. Others are simply making due with what they have. Many are afraid of the economic future of America. Many are disillusioned for good reasons. This is the Gen Y I'm witnessing.

Fucking sheltered ass writers... smh.

Generation Y started in the early 80's

Generation X was from the late 60's until the late seventies

I was in Gen X

We are finally coming into power. GenX is taking over the world. We are slowly gobbling up the worlds wealth. They said the same shit about GenX and yet here we are.

It's them millennium babies that are going to grow up weak. They are overprotected, told 2+2=as long as you tried.

I don't believe so. The baby boomers had it drilled into them to work hard, save every penny, invest wisely, etc. Their kids though (us, I guess) were conditioned to live like the Jones', even if that includes going heavily into debt.

We all know people who have done this, and in general, these people do not have money to help their kids get through college / uni, etc. So this next generation of young adults that are just coming up, are 100% on their own, because their parents overstretched themselves too much, and don't have the ability to help them get their own life setup.

Where are you? I'm in New York City's Lower East Side - all I see is food stamp scams and kickball leagues. And faggots everywhere.

I'd like to step into a few of those kickball leagues with my GenX friends and put a hurtin on them with some dodgeball.

Anyone else down?

I think your telling it like it is. The GenY do have to get their own life setup and are 100% on their own.

The problem is, they dont even know how to do laundry, get a job, or even make toast. Its one thing to be "100% on your own" when life has prepped you for it. It's another to be "100% on your own" and barely know how to tie your own shoes b/c you didnt have to do shit your whole life.

That's cool and all, but what's YOUR opinion on Gen Y? You didn't mention anything stating your own stance.

He is being a bit sensational, I'll give you that, but his message is pretty spot on. Gen Y AS A WHOLE is pretty lazy. They don't really have the drive to work as hard as previous generations. I'm not talking about people on this forum. This forum is full of hustlers. This forum is an anomaly and in no way represents the general population. I'm talking about looking around at your peers.

Nearly everyone I talk to hates their job and thinks they should be in a higher position than they are. But when I talk to them, you find out they do nothing like read books, continue their education, or do anything to improve their job skills outside of work.

Young white women is exactly who I was thinking about when I read that article. Entitled and delusional. And not just delusional about where they think they should be in their career but delusional about who they should be marrying. No guy is good enough. No job is good enough. In short, they are a bunch of whiny cunts.

First of all, I don't think that wide a span for Gen Y makes sense.

I am born early 80s to baby boomers and there is a massive difference between those my age +- 5 years and those born around 1990.

Most of my generations childhood was spent without internet and cellphones. We did not have Facebook or Pinterest or all the other mindnumbing voyeuristic social media.

I really do not recognize this 'I am special' in people around 30 years old. I see people who are a lot more realistic and less naive about the world than their baby boomer parents who got everything way too easy. I've worked since 13 years old and so has most my friends who now do well. Those many hours doing crap work for shit wages (much of which is illegal now), gave me a good work ethic and to be happy with work that wasn't filthy, backbreaking and physically hard.

I will say though, that this article is about 'Lucy' - a woman - and many, many women of my generation are completely delusional about their world. I remember it vividly how girls were pampered to the extreme in school and constantly told how special they were. Women between 30-40 constantly bitch about wage gap, not enough maternity leave, invisible ceelings, not enough good men etc etc. Completely self entitled bitches. They better wise up though or they will be so special that the only companion they will have will be their cat.

Now, for the generation aged 18-25, then I will say yes, that generation grew up with a cellphone in their hand and social media everywhere. They are hugely invested in their own public image. They can't imagine a world where you are not constantly on in some way. Many of them are spoilt as fuck and have no idea about what it takes in the real world. On the flipside, some of them are smart as hell, independent thinkers and very tech savvy which is why some of them are millionaires before 20 years old. The best and the worst it seems in that generation.
