Going ISP-Free

I hope I won't get flamed for being cheap, but I'm seriously thinking of going ISP-free. For a couple of years I've been using Verizon FIOS, and the connection speed is generally very good. They raised it on my after the first six months to $29.99, then it went to $35.99, then $42.99, then $47.99 and I just got a new bill: $57.99 for just a single month of online service. Holy crying fuck! What a great rebill they have going for them in this economy.

Posting this right now using my neighbors unsecured signal. A little slower, but the job got done. I looked in my Airport list, and saw at least 2 other networks available that I could connect to, but they're weaker. I was thinking of getting a USB laptop wifi signal enhancer.

At this point also I am awaiting an ipod Touch delivery to unshackle myself from the home computer connection and be connected everywhere. No only is the service overpriced, but being shackled to a single provider feels very stale. There is so much open wifi around, I think within a few years it's going to be free for many of us. Also, I believe that if the usb wifi signal enhancers are any good, it would have served well in Vegas at the hotel I was in - which charged $13 a day for freaking DSL. (There was a Starbucks with free wifi across the street.)

I have a lot of affection for you naughty boys and your wicked, industrious ways. ;) What is your opinion of wifi theft? I don't consider it theft if the connection is unsecured.

Opinions, please.

Me personally... a little overkill on your part.

Not gonna lie, I read the first paragraph then skimmed the rest, but I did catch "iPod Touch" and "unshackle" in the same line. So I'm guessing you're gonna go and tether your connection.

My iPhone speeds fluctuate with just regular phone browsing, so I can only imagine the fucking headache you're gonna see with your whole marketing operation going through that network.

Enjoy....

What speed do you get for the $60?

I would happily pay top dollar for top bandwidth. Max I can get currently is 8mb and costs about $40.

Yonder, want to really wicked? You can get one of these

Or on a serious note, its probably not that hard to amplify your signal receiver, such as this sophisticated piece of anarchy right here

Btw, this is being posted from my neighbors connection as we speak as well, lol

Turned on the router, and this is the result of a speed test:

Last result:
Download speed: 8466 kbps (1058.3 KB/sec transfer speed)
Upload speed: 1789 kbps (223.6 KB/sec transfer speed)

LOL. Nice work. I need something that can be easily packed, but the mechanics are probably similar. There is also a downstairs Mac Mini in bedroom that has connectivity problems, that never even saw the neighbors' signals. Running this Macbook upstairs in a large room with open windows - this enhances signal pickup.

What is your opinion of wifi theft? I don't consider it theft if the connection is unsecured.

So if you were to leave your purse in the car and forgot to lock the door, and somebody opened the door to take it I gather you wouldn't view that as theft either?

What if a neighbor hooked their hose up to your unsecured nozzle to water their lawn?

If my hose was dripping, and they used the water to water the lawn, I'd be glad they did it and saved me from flooding my property. Their wifi is dripping signal, not my issue.

Nice rationalization, petty theft is just the beginning of how low you can go with thinking like that.

only reason i don't 'leech along' their networks;

# you have no clue if that motherfucking is some up-and-coming scriptkid, sniffing all your traffic/injecting packets, or worse!

i do sometimes proxy through them for mass posting activities :party-smiley-004:

Opinion noted. Thank you, Captain Righteous.

Whatever, you even called it theft yourself. Are you just looking for some anonymous person on a message board to tell you it's ok? There's certainly worse shit going on in the world so fuck it, go nuts.

The more I think about it, the less I'm sure it is theft. I'm not responsible for what's in the air, including other people's wifi signals. If out with the ipod touch, and I get a signal and can connect, is it my responsibility to hunt down the source of the signal and tell the owner to shut it down or charge me to use it? I have no idea the source of the signals, and they could very well be free access wifi signals which I know is available at certain points around here. It's not my responsibility to maintain the security of anybody's networks, and if they leech signal they have to close it up themselves.

Stealing a purse from a car with a door unlocked is not only theft, it's also breaking and entering. If I left the purse on a park bench and somebody took it, that's not theft. It's my mistake.

Why would you run your business over unencrypted wifi?

Not to mention stolen wifi. Your freeloading bandwidth usage could slow down their downloading speeds on a service they're actually putting up money for.

I would give my left nut to get FIOS for $60 a month. We don't even have the option here... Instead I have shitty mediacom "high speed cable" that goes down at least once a week and gives me 4Mbps if I'm lucky. Oh, and it costs me $60 a month.

Oh, another thing. My brother keeps his wifi connection open so he can spy on people. He has login information for all of their (his neighbors) sites. Just sayin'
