Cash or tournament?

How many players? What's the blind structure?

Do you know how to calculate pot odds, count your outs and understand what EV means? (I'd ask if you're good but anyone who's played for more than 10 minutes will say they're good).

Are the other players good?

How much does $500 mean to you?

Apparently $500 is high stakes when you get a $1,000 welfare check.

Don't worry boy, the first of the month is right around the corner.

inb4 Chickenfucker lost all his money thread

How is a $500 buy in high-ish stakes? Its pretty much the standard for the lowest limit NL games in damn near any casino. Perhaps you should lower your sites a bit and find a nice penny slot machine.

And if you insist on practicing this week just know that

Tournament Poker is nerf poker.

I know tons of tournament players who crumble when they actually stand to lose money on every hand they play.

Same goes vice versa though. They might as well be two different games, lots of different skills involved in both, and they each play very differently.

You only have to watch Hellmuth on the big cash games on TV to see that top tournament play doesn't carry over into cash...

Chicken: tight and aggressive if you're serious about winning any money. Likely they're all fish I'd expect. If you don't know what a tight aggressive strategy is then just turn up, get drunk and play however the fuck you want.

so you sit down with 500 on a 5/10 table, which is a smallish stack. your "competition" is comprised of people who can barely figure out the value of the hand they hold.

you can easily win 5big blinds every 100 hands playing this strategy:

If its a passive game with lots of calling preflop, call any hand if 2 people have called before you.

On the flop, play fit or fold.

If thats not the case, play only good hands, where good is:

big pairs (tens or higher)
AK, AQ
KQ if you wanna be fancy.

Hands like AJ and KQ are big losers for inexperienced players because they always get into big pots when theyre dominated.

A good made hand on the flop is top pair top kicker. Anything less and you want to keep the pot smallish.

On the button, play any hand. Always raise preflop if you wanna play. Especially in No-limit games, position is the most important thing in the game. More important than the actual value of your hand.

In general, play fit or fold. Bluffing doesnt work against people who dont play seriously (which is the case in the lowest available stakes games).

Dont give a shit about defending your blinds. While this is very important in a competitive game of poker, its just 1big blind. Not that much compared to the 50 big blinds youll lose finding yourself with K9s on a K72 rainbow flop trying to figure out whether the guys really holding AK.

5/10 blind, cash. i play 3 hands in every 10.

You guys are playing short stacked. Since you say you play 3/10 hands without regard to position, the number of players, stack sizes or how the players around you are playing, here's some advice.

1. With the stacks and blinds the way they are, it's going to be a pre-flop game. Suited connectors and small pairs lose drawing value. Look for big pairs and high cards (AQ+, 99+), if you're not willing to go all the way with a hand pre-flop fold.

2. I suspect the other players are fish. Don't bluff (you'll get called) and play ABC, if you're dealt AA raise or re-raise, play your strong hands aggressively, chances are they won't be paying attention to you playing tight and won't respect your raises, so no reason to get tricky.

3. There's a lot more incentive to attack and defend blinds pre-flop in a game like this. Pay attention to those you have position on.

4. Play position. Be aggressive pre-flop. Make them pay to play. The money will be going in pre-flop and on the flop. Be ready to gamble. I'd show up with a few buy ins.

A little advice? Do not throw money away... Buy a pair of shoes, they will last longer.
