Google bans ads for payday loans

from the link:

As Georgetown's Center on Privacy & Technology, which worked with Google on setting this new policy, notes in a statement, "Payday lenders profit from people’s weaknesses — particularly poor people and people of color. Every time someone clicks on those ads, search engines profit, too."

there will come a day when people will look back at a statement like that and see it as just as laughably racist as jim crow laws.

Now Google is making moral judgements on behalf of society where do they draw the line?

Fast food makes people fat and (probably) gives them cancer long term. Better not show that.

I'd guess lot's of poor people with weaknesses search online for flat screen TVs and iPhones. They can live with those right? Ban.

Cars, gosh people crash and die in cars. Ban.

Can't speak for the US but the payday industry is dead in the UK. Interesting how Google's moral compass only changed after this fact.

Looks like we will have to step up our efforts in organic, this summer will be bringing in a bunch more newbies into the space that were relying on paying google for their traffic.

I for one love this move by google, means less leads and more value to each one now, or at least it should.

Google isn't making moral judgements -- it's always entirely a business decision. It's about how much they can get away with versus the trade-off of PR and public perception -- which can in turn affect business. The user-experience argument as well.. still comes down to how much it affects the money for them.

Or did you believe their "don't be evil" mantra? :D
