I've checked search valume for let say [blue widgets] few weeks ago and Keyword Tool displayed 10000 or so (local search - UK). I've checked the same phrase today (also using exact match) and get 28. In both cases I've used Exact Match. Only difference was using different machines (computers). I understand that the valume is just a 12 months average but to go down from 10000 to 28 - I struggle to understand this. Any ideas?

Maybe I wasn't sober when I checked it first time...:anon.sml:

Using Google's Keyword Tool on different computers won't yield different results. You weren't sober the first time you checked.

Local search for different countries will show different results.

Also, Google KW tool has its own issues :)

Happens all the time for me. I have several different connections and Google geo-locates them all differently. I haven't actively tested it, but I've always sworn Google changes results between all of them. I'm convinced Google constantly plays games and they most definitely have some sort of localisation thing going on - even when I tell them not to.

I swear they're trying out experiments in cause and effect with regards to money spent, likelihood to advertise there and then, test spend, longevity, and even whether someone will then ignore the results and do nothing.

It's one reason why I've decided to ignore alot of what they state, because the amount of traffic they control, trying out these tests in advertisers reactions and spend, would be a walk in the park.

Just my conspirational two penneth. :)

Thanks GOD for this answer :)

I'm sure I checked valume using the same settings (on UK version) so I expect the difference in valume appeared when the month changed (data is an average of 12 months). I see Search Trend for this keyword went down drastically but to change the years average so much... it is not mathematically possible.

So it must be a like you're saying - they play - or maybe rather they make their tools more precise. I'm using the Keyword Tool mostly to find some exact match domains - so seeing search valume drop from let say 8000 to 700 is a bit of dissapointment.

I made a notes for a different keywords as well and I see now clearly that search valume for them dropped. I was just curies if anyone had similar experience or it is just me doing some obviously retarted things when using the tool.

Anyway thanks for answers to everyone.

It's not you, bud. I'm in the middle of working on a backlink campaign, and I have quite a few files logging KW search results from the tool. and yup, after 5 days, I've seen quite a few 15000 exact match, go down to like 1200 and less. On MANY words.

Was thinking the same thing, how can you trust this sh*t. Anyway, for my situation they are still the popular KW's so I'm going with it anyway, will see how it pans out when the pages rank higher.

So it's the tool then. Oh well, I will have to live with it. Thanks for info allco.

I think you were drunk at the time,i think there is no way there could be that many searches in one month.

Search differences between Google data

New Google Keyword Tool results <----fucked up results

versus

Old Google Keyword Tool Results/MS Results/MNF Results <----all coming up with basicaly the same results (within 5%).

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Keyword - "example"

New Google Tool - 68 Exact - 300 Phase - 1200 Broad

Old Google Tool/MS/MNF - 6500 Exact - 18100 Phase - 38900 Broad

--------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the current results, which have stayed steady for the last 2 weeks I've been checking and I now believe the old tool/MS/MNF always had the incorrect data from Google.

The site is an exact match that quickly went and stayed at #2 currently almost no traffic. I've built my share of adsense and other sites that do well and this is the first time I'm seeing this happen.

Keyword looked good through all my checks (New Google tool was not out when I purchased domain through expired:angryfire:).

I am currently seeing this issue on a large amount of keywords not simply the one above.

Yup, i have notice the exact same thing. I have an exact match domain at #2 for a keyword that the old tool (all i had access to when i bought the domain) said was 12,000 a month local exact. It gets under 400 visits. The new tool says 1000, which seems correct.

The new tool however is a pain in the arse. It often fails to show the results for the actual keyword i type in, just a whole bunch of related terms.
Its really pissing me off!

Google did a major update recently to the data for their keyword tool.

Thanks for information, good to know.

I was writing about the 10000 serches a month keywords - believe it or not it is possible...

I've seen some drastic changes in search valume - some of the exact match domains are not fisible for new SEO campaigns anymore due to a low search valume. It's time to look for a new keywords.

It's OK if new tool is more precise, at least you can expect results closer to reality.

Yeah I noticed the same thing....I started some websites for exact keyword match domains with a normal traffic but after this change in Keyword Tool these keywords are no more in Suggestion tool.

Even some of my keyword with more than 1M search for exact keyword match now moved to the half volume
:(

The data from the New KW tool is more accurate.

Old KW tool gets data from search partners etc.

New tool only gives info from Google.com searches. (this includes, of course, all the different country tld's .co.uk etc)

I would quote Matt Cutt on this but I'm too busy to find the link to it.

^As per clyde's comment. Here's the main Google thread discussing this issue: Bizarre results between Keyword tool beta and previous interface. 1000 vs. 550000 results!? - AdWords Help

Full explanation from a Google employee:
"If you use both the previous and updated versions of the Keyword Tool to search for keywords, you may notice differences between the tools for statistics on Global Monthly Searches and Local Monthly Searches. This is because the previous version of the Keyword Tool provides search statistics based on Google.com search traffic and traffic from search partners, while the updated version of the Keyword Tool provides search statistics based on Google.com traffic only. We've updated these statistics based on user feedback, and hope you find them helpful for keyword selection."

My keyword went down from 44000 to 72. The day I bought the exact match for it was a nice sunny day and then BANG! All my noob dreams have been destroyed.

Still the difference of ten of thousands in search valume is a bit shocking.

The higher end estimate may still be off by a large margin (you can never know for sure), but the lower one is definitely grossly underestimated if you're targeting a globally relevant keyword, given that most searchers outside the US don't use Google.com, but rather some local variant (Google.ca, etc.).

So, I wouldn't give up on it completely (assuming that in both cases you were looking at exact match results).
