Google to buy Motorola Mobility

Motorola is some serious shit, I helped patent a few designs while I was there. They would patent on average about 200 new products a year. I was working on some emerging tech devices when I left. Seamless convergence of Wireless and Cellular networks on one device. Roam from wifi to cellular without dropping the call. Moto was also one of the first to integrate Android. They split the company back around 2008 in order to prep for a sale to a competitor.

I can't imagine this helping them argue against any antitrust issues the FTC may have.

This has nothing to do with google getting into mobile hardware and everything to do with google defending itself in the oncoming Patent wars they are currently fighting against conspirators Apple and Microsoft.

Google even said so today.

So it's obvious now that Android has Mac and Windows both scared shitless and they KNOW that they have no honest way to fight their rapidly approaching demise.

This was a major #win for google. Motorola owns patents going back to the very first cell phone. (Perhaps further!)

I am pretty convinced now that Google is going to totally OWN all communications in the future. (That it wants to. Some bizzes are not as profitable as others.)

As for an antitrust thing, Fugeddaboutit. There are lots of competitors for both software and hardware right now this won't directly harm, so the DOJ has nothing to point to as the victim.

Wondering when is google going to put up a competitor for ebay or amazon?

@lukep: Give us an update on your world domination plot :D

Wondering when is google going to put up a competitor for ebay or amazon?

both of those verticals require outrageous amounts of customer service and Google hates that, I doubt it will happen in the next 5 years. They'd be more likely to buy someone like eBay than launch a competitor

As developer I'm happy because this means less fragmentation that is the worst disease of Android world.

They tried and failed. Froogle as ebay competitor and Googke Checkout as Paypal competitor.
Maybe they could buy a niche market place like Etsy.com and then boost their competition against Amazon and Ebay.

Considering the size of the deal, and who it's with, it does explain better why they didn't go after the Nortel IP portfolio aggressively.

And give away my advantage of surprise? Never!

(But if you must know, it involves walruses.)

"Walruses" alone doesn't provide any hint at all.

Considering that they are going after everything, it looks like they'll soon have something in that space too

They can always try again and again like they are doing with Google+ after Orkut failed.

Walruses in battle armor?

Um... I think I've said too much now. :uhoh2:

Word. Nobody but google can take this approach but it's certainly working for them so I'm sure they will follow through one day. Kinda scary, actually.

All our bases will belong to teh googlez.
