Guess I'm gettin' old, I don't even look for grat lines anymore, which means I'm probably tipping too much most times.... If it was good/great you get a tip, if you didn't do a dance or jump through smile hoops or make my girl feel comfortable you don't.
There's a few things in life I don't mind paying good money for, my shoes, my foods, my bed, my ride. I find myself tipping daily here (Toronto Canada), from my morning coffee, to my smokes even, it's not much even though it adds up month to month. Still I believe in good karma and it does show a lot about you.
I also usually leave 20%'ish on my dinners IF the service was great, and I can't lie Toronto has amazing food and they compete like crazy to have the best staff so they can keep their posh clients, so it's rare you get shitty service but when I do I make it known politely, and I tip less or not at all if it was that bad, and no I don't feel bad about it if it's THAT bad.
Dunno about calling any/every waiter/waitress a dumb ass because they choose to work for $4/hour + tips, it accounts for a heafty % of the hospitality labor force and as stated a lot of the time you can earn bigtime if you know how to charm and or work at the right place. Forcing grat on random customers who don't fit some bill = horrible in my opinion. Think the restaurant needs to re-evaluate WHY they are attracting a lot of people that don't tip, and not assume they are just in a cheap area and can't do better themselves...
