Gratuity Included

Guess I'm gettin' old, I don't even look for grat lines anymore, which means I'm probably tipping too much most times.... If it was good/great you get a tip, if you didn't do a dance or jump through smile hoops or make my girl feel comfortable you don't.

There's a few things in life I don't mind paying good money for, my shoes, my foods, my bed, my ride. I find myself tipping daily here (Toronto Canada), from my morning coffee, to my smokes even, it's not much even though it adds up month to month. Still I believe in good karma and it does show a lot about you.

I also usually leave 20%'ish on my dinners IF the service was great, and I can't lie Toronto has amazing food and they compete like crazy to have the best staff so they can keep their posh clients, so it's rare you get shitty service but when I do I make it known politely, and I tip less or not at all if it was that bad, and no I don't feel bad about it if it's THAT bad.

Dunno about calling any/every waiter/waitress a dumb ass because they choose to work for $4/hour + tips, it accounts for a heafty % of the hospitality labor force and as stated a lot of the time you can earn bigtime if you know how to charm and or work at the right place. Forcing grat on random customers who don't fit some bill = horrible in my opinion. Think the restaurant needs to re-evaluate WHY they are attracting a lot of people that don't tip, and not assume they are just in a cheap area and can't do better themselves...

Man, tipping is a bullshit custom.

Someone explain to me why I need to tip the hair dresser, valet guy, stripper, bouncer, usher, waitress, bartender, girl that pours my coffee at starbucks ... next thing you know, you need to tip your doctor for performing your yearly rectal examine.

Another thing: servers should stop guilt tripping the customer into tipping by asking "How is the food, is everything alright?" every 5 minutes with their bull shit smile.

I know your ploy and I'm not falling for it.

Besides, you're interrupting a man's reminiscing thoughts -- like the time I took a shit in a public washroom, and some random old man walks in and exclaims "Holy shit what's that smell?!"

Tipping bullshit -- and you know it.

Only person you should really tip is the pizza delivery guy, because he needs it for gas money.

My tip for everyone else: get a better job, birdie.

lulz ... You guys who are whining just fucking sound stupid.

By the sound of it you think notorious means that you've left $10 twice in your life. Bitching until comped ... jeez, I hope you like eating feces the next time you go out. Word travels from pub to pub.

Working in a restaurant should be mandatory for 2 years for everyone... lots of life lessons are taught there.

This is what a lot of cheap people don't catch on to. Make sure if you're a cheap fuck with an arrogant smile on your face; that you never go back.

I used to work with a guy who did nasty shit to cheap people's pizza who were regular shit tippers. There are lots of people like him around to. It's an insult, and makes you appear less than human.

Tipping is part of our culture, we don't live in Asia, where the culture looks differently on service. We're all "better than thou" and expect to be paid shit loads of money, for very little effort.

+1 rep for erect for nailing it on the head.

If you don't want to pay for service, buy a product and prepare it yourself.

I agree a forced tip will make servers lazy, and probably ends up hurting their bottom line in the end.

Amanda11: Your comment about the waitress bugging you every five minutes is where the contradiction in service happens. If they don't hassle you, you may be expecting them to--and they get stiffed. People like you and I might appreciate if they leave us the fuck alone, but there is no way for them to know ahead of time.

Easy tip calculation

Great service = double the tax which in Texas will be a little over 16%

Shit service = Tax rounded down to whole dollar amount. If they make so much money to give me shit service then fuck'em.

Or hell just give the shitty servers one of these.

Just tip your waiter/waitress. Grat is usually added to parties of 8 or more. It's not the server's policy, it's the restaurants. They can't help that so don't punish them. If your service was good, just give a bit extra. In the OPs case, I have no idea why it was added to a party of 2... but I'd be willing to bet it was out of the server's control.

A lot of waiters/waitresses are just trying to make an honest wage by doing a mostly thankless job. And in most cases, due to upbringing or just a bad luck streak in their life, it's the only job they can maintain to save up some money to go back to school or feed their kids. A lot of people simply don't tip which is just wrong.

When im out with the entire family like 8+ people and they add gratuity on a large pricey meal it ticks me off.

It shouldn't, think about the other patrons. I've more than once been sitting there enjoying my meal, then had some large 12+ group arrive, only to have my waiter stolen from me for 15 minutes while they take orders because some fat bitch can't decide if she wants broccoli on the side or not. Shit like that affects my own service, and it's not the waiters or the restaurants fault, but it sure as hell affects the amount I'm willing to tip if I'm affected.

I used to work in the service industry waiting tables ect... and I REALLY hate fucking tipping unless you do a great job.

Make me feel welcome, tend to my needs without making too large of a presence, and make sure the food aint fucked up sure ill slap you some nice extra greenbacks.

You cop an attitude with me, hardly ever come over to the table, leave empty drinks ect, I'll leave you fuckin .27 cents or whatever the fuck change i have in my pockets. I never leave $0 cause then they might think i forgot, just make sure it includes pennys. If I'm paying with a card my favorite is leave 2 cents tip with "do a better job" next to it

Yeah I never really got why I should have to tip for a service rendered, I mean just charge me the cost of w/e the fuck it is that I'm paying for and leave it at that. If my haircut cost 10 dollars, then it should cost 10 dollars... not 10 + a 4 dollar tip for the stylist... Why are we making this more complicated by adding variables... if they want 14 fucking dollars for the haircut, just charge everyone 14 dollars.

The same goes for food... I hate it that when you go into a restaurant, it almost feels like an obligation to tip... if you want 30 dollars instead of 24 dollars for my steak dinner.. just make it reflect in the menu prices.. seriously this whole tipping shit is retarded.

Like a lot of people, I'm really tired of the tip jars present all over the place. The cost of living has gone up, while wages are depressed, which probably is why everybody's got their hand out over the past few years.

That said, I figure the tip into the total cost of eating out or whatever. If I can't afford the total price, I don't eat out or get my hair cut. I never fail to tip, no matter the quality of the service.

The Real Question: How much do you guys tip on to go orders, nice restaurants, not Mickey D's?

This thread is suprisingly insightful.

For those that say you need to tip or else you'll get feces in your food/drink.. All that does is make people tip out of fear.

If I take my car to the dealership for an oil change, I gotta tip the mechanic now just cause its a service? WTF. Shouldn't I be scared he might remember me next time and pull a few wires or some shit or maybe not change the oil at all?

You wanna put shit in my food or drink or give me bad service next time around, I say do it. All that does is make me not want to come to your restaurant anymore and you lose out on some business, which in the end hurts them. Also, let me find some shit in my food, I'll gladly contact my lawyer and have a lawsuit brought on. If a business owner lets that shit go on, they gladly need a lawsuit brought on to them and deserve to lose a lot of business and go bankrupt.

I come to your restaurant because of 2 things:
1. Quality of product
2. Service

This is also why I pick a realtor, car dealership, web designer, content writer, telephone service, etc. However, I don't tip my realtor, car salesman, outsourced workers or my cell phone provider. In your scenario I should be tipping them because they are providing me a service, and if I don't.. I might get shitty service next time. You offer me a price for your product and I buy it, if your service sucks I drop you like its hot and that's it. I shouldn't have to pay you more for better service and for sure you better not be putting it on my bill upfront expecting it. I'll give you a tip if I feel like you did above and beyond what I expected, but even then I'm having to pay for better service in a sense.

I find it funny some of you guys preaching that you should tip because of XYZ reasons are the same guys I walked around with in San Diego for a4d meetup or at ASW and would ignore/not tip the street performers as they played music and did tricks on the sidewalk. They provided you a service by entertaining you while you walked by and by not tipping aren't you afraid the next time you walk by they might bash you in the head with their tuba?

All this "forced" tipping is just creating an environment where more people expect a handout. Tip jar here, tip jar there..

When does it come to me having to tip the checkout lady at my grocery store, the bagger that bagged my food, the greeter at the front door for saying hello, or the stock boys for making sure all the food was placed on the shelves just so I could buy it? All of that is a service right so I should be tipping all of them 15% right?

At $200 a trip ( with 15% tip ) to the grocery, I would be tipping everyone $30 each, so my bill would be $320.

Do you tip your usher at the movies as well?

How about the lady that made sure your popcorn was buttery and drinks filled to the top when you went to the movies? Do you tip your banker when you walk into your bank and check on your account or need to do something with your bank account?

Yeah, didnt think so. Why should eating a sit down meal be any different.

If a barber charges $10 for a haircut, then he should expect $10 for a haircut, not $13. And if he doesn't get that $3 extra and makes you look like Justin Dupre, then what it boils down to is he is upset he didnt make that extra $3 for whatever reason and is taking out on his customer, which he deserves to lose. If the barber is running a solid business, making profit, and doing things right.. he doesn't need that tip to stay in business. If he is taking his anger out on customers and not making ends meet, he needs to raise his prices, but expecting a tip and then punishing people after wards if they don't get it is just plain stupid.

Maybe I should tip my sheriff or local police when I see them in hopes that they will treat me better when I get pulled over or need them. Oh wait, that's called a bribe and generally is illegal. The definition of a bribe fits in well with tipping based on what some of you guys are saying. Sorry, I don't need to bribe people to give me poor service or just average service and I don't need to bribe them in hopes they might treat me better next time around.

I guess when I pay my taxes I should give the local gov. 15% more too, I mean they provide me with streets, schools, and lot of other shit and they always complain that their broke.

The Real Question: How much do you guys tip on to go orders, nice restaurants, not Mickey D's?

This thread is suprisingly insightful.

To go orders, nothing. Most of the pizza places around here charge extra for delivery, plus a lot of pizza places pay their drivers so much per mile as well around here. If the pizza store didn't charge extra for delivery and I knew the driver wasn't reimbursed for some of his gas mileage, then I would tip him as he is out some money ( unlike a waiter ).

If your talking to go like Chinese or something you pick up on a to go order, I don't see much point in tipping there either. All they did was make the order and bag it and MAYBE checked it for accuracy. I expect my food to be accurate, so I don't feel the need to tip there either.

If I'm in a nice restaurant eating my food getting good/above whats expected service, then I will gladly leave 20% no doubt. Maybe I have a different sense of whats expected and whats not though. I expect my food to be hot, edible, brought out on time, and accurate. I also expect my drinks to be full as well.

If your not doing what I expect though, but you were cheerful and played with my kids and did all kinds of great things for me. I'll leave you a tip, but I wont be back because the core reason of me being there ( to eat food that was hot, edible, brought out on time, and accurate ) was not met. So you might get a 1 time tip from me, but ultimately you lose cause I'm not coming back. Why would I continue to eat somewhere that doesn't meet my needs.

Based on that, doing whats expected is 10x more important then bribing someone for great service next time around, which you might not even get. I pay whats expected of me for my meal and therefor I expect a certain level of service. If you go beyond that as a server, then I will gladly leave you something extra if I feel it merits it... otherwise don't expect more because I didnt get more.

^ (insert to long didn't read here)

I have started to just throw out this whole percentage bullshit. The guy who is serving my food at a small dinner does the same job as the guy at fridays and as the guy at the steak house. They still refill the drinks, still bring me my food, and still ask me how things are. I don't see why I should have to tip on the cost of the food. I get that they make $4/hr which is all taxes, ive worked in food service for a good 6yrs. But never have I seen a waiter go home with no money.

In fact every waiter I knew in college made well over $100 for 3-4hrs work and then went out every night and partied like rockstars. The bar tenders even drove BMWs. We went out every night and drank till last call which was 5am! Those were the days... You guys can stick to your 20% but don't be fooled by all of this bullshit about how poor waiters are and how they have to get big tips or they will starve. If they wanted/need more money they would work more than 3-4hrs a day. Most wont even give a shit if you tipped bad you are just one table out of the hundred plus they are going to see that night.

Awesome Thread. I worked in the restaurant field for a couple of years during high school. If they add a gratuity to the check, i will throw down a few extra bucks if the server did a good job, (at like a red robin or something like that) and call it good. Either way i don't care unless i get really shitty service then ill talk to the owner/manager. if i get a lot of service from a bus boy/girl then ill slip them $5 bucks and tell them they did an awesome job. idk im a softy for people in the service industry.
