San Adreas was pretty dope, but it's a bit dated now. I'd just get stuck in on GTA V.

Pretty much all the GTA games are a story in itself, so you can't go wrong starting anywhere. GTA 3 (the original) was my least favorite. Understandably the graphics are better in each version but if you can get past that they're all amazing to play through.

I'd say start with GTA:Vice City and GTA:San Andreas expansion packs and play those. Then move on to GTA 4 so you can appreciate the incremental changes. Grab the 3 expansions for GTA 4 and play those and if you're not totally burnt out on it, move to GTA 5.

... Oh and it'll probably take you several weeks to complete each story unless you play games for 8 hours at a time.

Are you playing on PC? If so, I'd go with IV (you missed out on the bundle Steam had for their xmas sale), the ones prior to that are pretty dodgy console ports, the menus have to be navigated using the arrow keys and there's not a lot of use for the mouse.
