Attorney: Father of bound toddler shown on Facebook 'devastated' - CNN.com

You've probably seen this all over the news channels yesterday. A guy binds his 22 month old daughter with painters tape and posts a photo on facebook saying

Across the top of the photo were the words: "This is wut (sic) happens wen (sic) my baby hits me back," according to prosecutors and police reports. The message was followed with a winking emoticon.
Then he gets slammed with felony aggravated domestic battery and the media blows up.

Taping up your children isn't a cool or smart thing to do but here's where I think the media is blowing this out of proportion and seem to be skimming over a few key details.
1. He didn't use duct tape, packaging tape or even scotch tape. He used painters tape. Which is basically thin easy to rip paper with barely any adhesion. I'm pretty sure my cat could easily get out of painters tape. 22 months old is pretty damn young, but i have my doubts on whether it actually hurt her. IMO if anything he probably had a hard time keeping the tape on her and still long enough to take a photo. I'll agree that taping up her mouth was quite a bit excessive. 2 yr olds often get stuffed noses. Not cool! But as far as what was used to bind her he could have used something stronger like party streamers and everyone would have thought it was cute instead of slamming him in jail.

2. He clearly didn't leave her alone like that or leave her taped for an excessive amount of time. It was done while he was playing around with her.

3. I've seen articles of parents doing a hell of a lot worse to their kids and getting away with it. Chances are, if he gets convicted of this the kid will be taken into foster care or given to someone on the other side of the family.

What do you think? Should this dude get a few months in jail and lose custody of his daughter or is it being blown out of proportion?

that article is a perfect example of how the media is all over this.

Clearly from the picture he's using painters tape but from the article above:
Claiming Duct Tape
A 21-year-old Chicago man is in legal trouble after he posted Facebook pictures of his baby daughter with her mouth, wrists and ankles bound in duct tape.
Fox news: Claiming Duct Tape
Judge Sets Bond For Chicago Father Charged In Facebook Duct Tape Photo | Fox News
A judge has set bond at $100,000 for a Chicago father who posted an image on Facebook depicting his 1-year-old daughter bound with duct tape on her mouth, wrists and ankles.

CBS:

Prosecutors: Dad who bound toddler with tape was playing - Crimesider - CBS News
Prosecutors said Wednesday that a man was playing with his 1-year-old daughter when he bound her in tape and posted a picture of it on Facebook.

If you look at the google news search for this. Nearly every snipplet of the original articles says Painters Tape, but once you click on the current version of the article Painters Tape was changed to Duct Tape during a later edit.

IDK... based on all the horrible child abuse stories you hear about, I say that he should of fucking known better.

Why would you ever be stupid enough to pull off such a stunt? Doesn't take a genius to figure out that something like this is going to blow up in your face.

He was just playing with her. It's not like he left her like that for a long time* and the type of tape used isn't even that strong. Ever played cowboys and indians or cops and robbers? I got tied to a chair during both of those games and I tied people up as well. I wasn't traumatized, because it was just a game.

Maybe he shouldn't have posted it to facebook, but that's besides the point. He shouldn't be facing charges over this bullshit. Maybe look into the matter to make sure nothing actually happened. If he is the kind of asshole to leave her tied up like that there would be other signs of abuse.

*If he is the kind of asshole to leave her like that then he deserves to goto jail.

He's a fucking douchebag moron for playing that way with his child in the first place. I don't care if he used a 1-mm-wide strand of 1-ply toilet paper, the act of tying up your child like that and taking pictures of her like that says things to her head in its' formulative years... Bad things, like victim mentality.

OF COURSE he's too stupid to know this, his parenting standards are obviously very low.

So no, I don't want him to go to jail on the taxpayer's dime... But I do want him to learn why this is wrong exactly, immediately after plastering his face all over the web as "Worst Parent of the Month" or some other well-deserved award title.

Painters tape or not Fuck Him.......

It is not a matter of how sticky it is, look at how much is around her wrists and ankles I bet the tensile strength of that much tape would have been too much for her to break it.

We only have his word for the fact of how long he left her taped up after he was caught. His statement when he posted the picture says punishment, not playing around.

If he was that ballsy to post a picture online do you really think it was the first time he did something like this.

If you came home and found the babysitter had taped your kid up like that I doubt you would be so understanding.

Bottom line is he taped up his kid, thought it was so cool he posted it online and now he will get his day in court. If I was on the jury it would take quite a bit of convincing to get me to overlook that photo....

There is an obvious difference. If you play with your kid you know exactly how much strengh you used, how long the play lasted, did the kid enjoy it or not. If you come home and see your babysitter used tape on your daughter you don't know what had happened and your anger is justified.

Agreed, but there are certainly are worse parents. Personally I have seen meme worse.

Just a young parent having fun and being stupid.

+eleventy billion

He was stupid. But shit 100000x worse will happen to the kid in foster care.

Does he deserve humiliation for being retarded? yes
Does he deserve prison time and to have the kid taken from him JUST FOR THIS? No (but there could be other thigns this incident exposes)

Frankly I feel this is part of the media's ploy to make men out as always the vitimizer. If you look up child abuse cases of women within the last 24 hours you will find things millions of times worse that don't get mentioned in any mainstream media.

leave dood alone, he's just being a good dad.

Playing around with younger kids leads to shit like this happening. I've tied my daughter to her bed as my prisoner (with tickle punishment). She followed me for weeks dragging that damn jump rope ... begging for more. Pics would have been incriminating no doubt.

inb4 lukep accuses you of being a pedo

I agree with you it's stupid that people think it's not okay to play with your kids or thinking this would even cause them any kind of emotional harm.
