The thing that gets me about england is that show Trigger Happy TV. They do soooo much shit and people are cool with it. In america your ass would get arrested if you ever impersonated a cop or at least got taken in for disorderly conduct and harassment charges for at least 90% of the stuff they do on that show. Makes me wonder if England really is much cooler than we are.
Sorry mate, no offence but you invited this!!

[warning opinionated rant ahead!]
You want to compare England and America based on comedy... ok fine!
Trigger Happy TV was vaguely funny to start with - quickly got boring (not shown here for years, so prob dated if you are seeing it now - bit like half the US shows we get.)
Lets start with like for like.
The Office - Original British version, funniest thing on TV. When Ricky Gervais re-hashed it for the American market, still funny but no were near as good as the original.
Cartoons - you win that one! I can't think of a (mainstream) British cartoon that can compete with South Park, Family Guy or Ren and Stimpy
1-1
Stand-up - Bill Hicks v Billy Connelly (ok not English, but British and someone most peeps know) - Both fuckin geniuses! A draw me thinks!
Sitcoms - (I know the Office is a sitcom, but there's not many programmes/shows that have been re-done for our friends across the pond so it deserved it's own bit!)
Anyway, Sitcoms - most popular US sitcom, probably Friends vs a classic like Fawlty Towers. Friends is the biggest load of fuckin wank in the universe, same jokes, over and over again - same fuckin canned laughter, same useless corporate twats that I couldn't give a shit about. Fawlty Towers on the other hand... fuckin hilarious, original and they knew when to end it!
Sketch shows - The only decent American sketch show (that we get here) I can think of is the Daily Show, which I love... but compared to Monty Python's Flying Circus (or even stuff you prob don't get like Little Britain) it's nothing.
Political comedy - again the best US political comedian (that is shown here) I can think of is Jon Stewart, I like him - he's funny. But compared to Mark Thomas or even Jeremy Paxman (who isn't intentionally a comedian) he is so so tame, I saw Jon Stewart interview Jon McCain the other day and he gave him such an easy ride.
Anyway, I'll shut up now! Taking into account the size of the population I think England wins
(worth remembering though that the TV companies generally buy foreign shows that appeal to the mainstream - so prob not the funniest stuff!)
Please introduce me to some decent American comedy!
To paraphrase the guy you elected to lead you "bring it on"!
