Replaces SMS costs and is available on just about every single platform/phone available, even the shitty feature phones that most other countries use. Line is pretty popular too. Come to think of it, WhatsApp should be popular in the US too. I'm tired of paying out the ass for text messages. The only thing I don't understand is what happens if you get a new number, because when I signed up, the account was linked to the number.
 
Never heard of whatsapp other than facebook buying it.

I guess that's why so many in the US were perplexed by the dollar amount it brought.
 
yep, I still pay 20 cents per sms lol, whatsapp is huge here and everywhere in europe /not US I guess. also you can send pics, videos and audio messages, it is the perfect app to replace the rip-off sms shit
 
It lacks one crucial option, which I think is mega absurd in this day and age of social apps.

in addition to the other answers given it's a great way to communicate with family/friends overseas without having to use social media. That's not really possible via mobile on any mobile plan

Also use WeChat to talk to the Chinese Folk.

The one thing that annoys me about mobile sms is the cost. Recently vzw started to bundle it with the data plan but for the longest time they were charging separately for something that amounted to about 1MB of traffic per mo. Actually, I can't hate - smart on their part for keeping the feature separate and never lowering the cost
