I used something similar to that years ago, it was javascript ... but not his previous version. I was absolutely amazed at how well it did.
This one has it's drawbacks. Personally, I'd rather lose function to non-js enabled browsers rather than IE (all that "click, click, click" will be a giveaway) as it's a smaller market share.
I've always thought that this would be awesome for affiliate marketers to use to sniff different search phrases rather than different site homepages. It would be a pain in the ass, but possible as it's just checking whether a link is visited or not. Just imagine being able to flash ads to a user based on his/her searching activity.
