It's never ending.
An acquaintance of mine (I would say 'friend', except I can't bring myself to use that word for anyone so incredibly stoopid) decided to use the sucky Hostgator for a site, despite my warnings. And yes, they fucked him over. Guess how.
Was it:-
1. Hostgator downtime and general server unreliability?
2. Hostgator stealing his affiliate commissions?
3. Hostgator sites being automatically downgraded by Google?
4. Hostgator abusing his credit card and over charging him
5. Hostgator support don't speaka-da-eeengleeesh
6. Hostgator randomly changing thisngs about his php installation without warning, causing his site to fall over?
7. All of the above
8. None of the above
9. Something worse.

yep, 9. something worse. He spent some serious resources creating a *really* useful dataset, that he intended to sell via a membership site. Despite keeping it top secret, and being VERY careful, he was ... how shall I say... 'surprised' to find his dataset being offered for sale on a forum by some Indian. For a lousy couple hundred bucks, to add insult to injury.
He checked his logs, ftp etc, and nope, no leaks there. So he posed as a potential customer, and asked for proof the data was genuine / useful. The turbanhead replied that he had 'got it from a relative who works on the servers at hostgator, and he could get you anything you like from any site they host, member databases, code, cc numbers etc'.
Acquaintance complains to hostgator immediatley. Their response? Can his account and delete his site.
Nice.
And he doesn't have enough coin to sue them. Can't say he wasn't warned!
don't upload or leave anything valuable on any Hostgator server, unless you want to see it offered for sale on warez forums fast
