how can I look broke but act promising?

Just be yourself, if that's a bling bling show-off type then so be it, good luck to ya. Make friends with similarly shallow people and chat about your rolex and ferrari. If ya wanna spend and enjoy ya money but not show off, keep the material goods to a minimum and spend on experiences. Go travelling, learn to fly, take up sky diving, or whatever floats ya boat.

Now.. more important stuff... cars. :D

MG ZT?? It's a re-badged Rover! Might be rare in the states, might be a great drive, but it's still a Rover... The old MGs... now that's a different story!

I love MR2s yoink' and the older ones are so much better than the recent ones. Mk1's reportedly handle a lot better, but don't look half as pretty as mk2s! I was so close to getting a mk2 myself, but knew the minute I got it I'd need to take passengers or move something. :( Once my gf gets driving with a sensible car, I'll be looking at mr2s again.

When I read the OP, it translated out to me as this:

"I make more than other people, and am better than you because of my awesome car. I am sooo proud of myself, but just want to be normal, you know? I'm like the male version of Paris Hilton. I don't mean to brag but I am awesome at making monies online. Girls are intimidated by my awsomeness, but I really want to fuck them - but also don't want to give up my pretty boy clothing and car."

Your question (how can I look broke but act promising) is the answer. Dress normally, and drop any arrogant pretty-boy douche attitude you have - and reading your posts in this thread impresses on me that you are definitely an arrogant pretty-boy prick.

I shouldn't have posted the way that I did, I was drinking (a lot) when I made the original post and it was after a serious fight with my girlfriend. I apologize.

-Matt-
1. I never said girls were intimidated and I never said I wanted to fuck them. I've been with the same girl for a year, its been really rough lately, but I'm not looking for a hookup.

2. What's wrong with having a nice car? I have loved BMW's since I was like 15 and thought I'd reward myself with one now that I could finally afford to. Seems that other people who have posted in this thread feel the same way.

3. Honestly, if I made $25k/yr I would probably dress exactly the same way I do now. Nothing wrong with wanting to look presentable in public if you ask me.

For everyone who's related, thanks. Hopefully some of the positive suggestions that have come out of this post can help you out too.

1. If you have been with her for a year, you would think she would be indifferent to how much you make, how, and what your age is.

2. Nothing. I love nice cars. You asked "How do I look borke?" Broke people don't drive BMWs

3. Again, you want to "look broke" as you asked, but are unwilling to change the way you dress? There is nothing wrong with dressing nice - but it won't help you look broke (or "average joe").

Overall, I think you need to seriously think over your question. You can't expect to look broke and just be 'promising' if you already drive a BMW and wear flashy clothes. They don't go together.

I want to start this thread off by saying in no way am I trying to brag about my income. Just have an honest question below for the big earners out there:

In 2007, I made mid-6figs, and in a way publicized it. I didn't tell anyone how much I made, but in a way I was immature about it and bought expensive cars, expensive motorcycles, luxury apartments, big bar tabs, etc. I was 20yrs old in 07, with material things that retired men dream of.

I have outgrown my 'spending phase' and stay strict to my 'saving phase' now. I love the nice cars and other possessions I already own and I wouldn't even consider getting rid of them, but I am just curious as to how the rest of the single-men big earners on this forum have played down their $ having reputation. When I go out to places looking for good girls I don't want them to see me or hear of me in that way for obvious reasons, and I think that fact has kept me from getting closer to a lot of girls.

All the money in world but you can't fix your ugliness. Stick with the money to get women.

Exactly what I thought since a few years ago. And this is probably going to sound really stupid after everything I already posted.

My recnt ex girl, who is my ex-gf by my choice, fell in love with me before I made shit. I don't want a girl who is all about me for my $. She didn't give a shit about my money, which is why I thought she was awesome. At the same time, read it twice, she didn't give a shit about my money. I could make $100mil in a year and she wouldn't care. I could also spend $100mil on her in that same year and she still wouldn't care. Just seems to me that she is unappreciative and takes it all for granted. ::end rant
Wait...so you're telling me you left a girl that loved you for you? Who would have loved you regardless of if you were rich or poor? Who didn't give a damn if you made 4 figures or 6 figures or no figures at that? I don't know if anyone else shares my opinion (i doubt anyone my age shares this opinion) but dude I think you fucked up. It's rare finding those sort of people and it's going to be hard to find another one.

Not my intention at all. I don't think I've ever spoken about my earnings on WF before, it was an honest question asking advice from people who have been in the same situation. Good $ brings bad news, im sure there are a few people on this forum who can relate to that. I was asking for them, not you.

You sound like a dumbass but congrats on your earnings.

I love this website....

Everyone wanting to get rich, then when they get some $, they get pissed cause people look at them different.

bah - you do it for the dollas, swang dat lil cock round-n-round.

If this thread is going to turn into a thing where people want to talk shit about my original question then I'll just ask a mod to delete it.

My 100% intent was just to ask for tips from other established members about how to look like an average-joe, but at the same time, look successful.

@phil - advice from a girl (by the way, you sound like a cool guy)....

First off - STOP TRYING TO LOOK LIKE THE AVERAGE JOE - YOU ARE NOT!! You took risks, worked hard and you should be proud of yourself.

I think your challenge is that you need to put yourself in places where you are around young women who appreciate the finer things in life, want an ambitious man, yet have good values and will be loyal and faithful. And yes you want her to be extremely hot and attractive to you, fun and all the other stuff as well.

Speaking as a woman who only dates "successful men" (good character, financially ambitious, intellectually talented, academically accomplished, etc), I can tell you that for the right girl, it's a bit of a turn off when a guy tries to "hide" his wealth.

Why?

Because it says to the girl "I have dated a bunch of lower end chicks who only wanted me for my money, I got bruised and now I just lie to people!!". Be yourself!!

Put yourself around girls who are working to make their own money and in fact are excited to meet successful men who can teach us how to do what they do!

Or, if you are a more traditional guy who wants to marry a woman who will be a homemaker (nothing wrong with that), find someone who is willing to invest in your goals because she realizes by helping you succeed, you BOTH succeed.

Also - and don't flame me here - consider "dating up". In other words, find a girl from a wealthy background (the older the money the better) who is comfortable around wealth and is accustomed to the good things (you said your -ex didnt' appreciate it) but at the same time will be impressed by the fact that you weren't born with a silver spoon (not an assumption, you mentioned it in your thread...)..you weren't born with a silver spoon, you didn't want to steal one, so guess what? YOU MADE ONE!

Which reminds me what my ex boyfriend said to me one time when he suggested that I was with him for his money. I told him flat out that I was an ambitious woman and if I was going to f**k someone for money he'd be worth alot more than a million dollars. At which point he admitted to me, "I know, that's why I like you so much"...

The point is that you are an ambitious guy, you set goals for yourself, you met/meet them and you want a woman that will help you set and reach higher goals for yourself - and have fun with you in the process.

Start with maybe expanding your horizons. Try places like Toastmasters, the Young Benefactors Clubs at your local museums, or pick a charity. Find something you feel passionate about, don't just pick a charity that sounds good but that bores you to hell. You may not want to save the spotted owls but perhaps you love surfing and you want to swim in clean water. Pick some kind of charity like that.

When you go there, you'll start rubbing shoulders with the "right women".

If you hang out with "average joannas" (female average joes), they will have nothing but dollar signs in their eyes. And the men will be jealous of you.

Alot of your old palls will say you are selling out but that is just not the case. You may have been born into one set of circumstances but by the grace of God you were also born into one of the greatest countries on earth, a place where you can start from nothing and become anything (god I sound like the conservative-democrat/moderate republican that I am...).

No but seriously, don't listen to people who will tell you to act "rich" or to "act poor".

Be yourself. Your real friends will have to accept the new you and if they aren't as financially successful as you are, then be generous by teaching them to do what you did. If they aren't ambitious and have a vision for themselves that is different than yours...well this is painful to hear, but perhaps you have outgrown them.

Life is about growth. But to sum it up in terms of specific advice:

--Expand your social horizons such that you are in places where people appreciate "good things" (and money) but are so comfortable with it that they aren't going to be around you just because of it (i.e. "like you just for your money")

--Ameliorate your consumption habits a bit. The average girl will have dollars signs in her eyes by the expensive car that you drive but the real gem of a girl will be more impressed by those limited edition montblanc cuff links you wear that she knows you had to go to Switzerland to get yourself.

--Get a Marquis Jet card for out of town first dates - Marquis Jet Card - NetJets 25 hours at a time (j'/k!!)

--Date up - join a charity, go to Toastmasters, take a wine tasting class (just google for your area), try an Annex Learning Class or something similar

--Write a list ("a goal that isn't written down is just a wish"). Write down exactly what you want in a woman. I've had two gentlemen friends who have told me "I can usually tell within 15 minutes if a woman is worth a second date"). At first I thought they were being sexist pigs!

But then they told me what they meant...when they got serious about dating "quality women" they said they had an exact idea of what they were looking for and when they met women, they saved themselves a lot of time because they'd just go down their list and finally when they got to me, they knew they had struck gold!

Incidentally, your list should include having a woman who enjoys the nice things in life without being consumed by them. You want someone who will pop the champagne with you the day you open up your Cayman Island account with that 9 figure check; at the same time, if you go broke tomorrow, she will be your Black Hat assistant to help you get it all back in record time - ride or die!

You worked hard for the good things in life. You deserve to enjoy them. The trick is to surround yourself with people who like materialistic things but aren't CONSUMED by them. You CAN fine a girl who appreciates the exquisite design of your European car but at the same time would be with you if you were riding her on the handle bars of your used BMX bike.

The trick is you cant find exceptional people in "average" places. You remade yourself on the outside with the money, why not remake yourself on the inside as well? By that I mean start enjoy people and places of different backgrounds and you won't have to worry about people grabbing after your money - you'll be among peers (or better...which is sometimes good because it keeps you hungry).

Good luck!

if you are a lying wonder. You get a double F minus.

If not.

Why you going for broke women anyway?

Step your game up. It's plenty of attractive, intelligent women who make millions and wouldn't bat an eyelash at your "meager" mid 6 figure income.

Focus on your paper, women are all over and from the looks of it, you might not be able to handle the type of woman you think you want.

But yeah, save your dough and find out where the women with bread hang out. Half of your problem gone.

You won't find the cream of the crop hanging in a bar or a club. That is unless of course it's a private club in an exclusive location. But why look for chicks i a club except to screw?

Well said!!! Did we used to date? lol

Ok here's the deal. How do you not look like a douche bag with a small cock that uses his money as a crutch because he can't pull ass in B grade jeans driving a pickup truck.

Work on the inside first. My guess is being young and making a lot of money you're gaining your self confidence from how much money you make. Stop and imagine yourself using foodstamps and and having a hard time living one day to the next.

Who are you?
Do you still love yourself and your life?

It's sad to see people that gain their self confidence from the car they drive or watch they wear. They always need a more expensive house, watch, car to keep raising their self confidence.

Bottom-line if you even have to ask the question that you used to start this thread you need to do some serious soul searching and start asking you questions like "who am I?" Not because of the spending because the if you don't know the answer to how to be humble you need to go internal and work some things out.

More great advice - do you have some books the kid can read?
