How often do you buy a new computer/laptop?

@CCarter, listen man, you won't sell me the idea that I need a gaming laptop like an Alienware if 90% of my job is done within Google Chrome. If that's what the industry has come down to, it's sad.

I started this thread to see if I was the only one having to replace my laptop every 2 years, and it turns out I'm not. Also most people seem to agree that computers today aren't built as sturdy as they used to be. Everyone wants to make a profit and compete with cheap labour, that's fine... I accept the rules of the game and I'll keep buying a new laptop every 2 years. All my data is in the cloud anyways.

I'm happy that MacBooks are just as great as they always were, but I'm just not a MAC guy and will never be. End of story.

@BCG you argue with CCarter, he's the one that brought that up, not me.

I don't get this at all, you're the one complaining about having to buy a laptop and that the cheap ones have to be replaced more frequently; so I explained the reasoning behind it. If you want a laptop that last longer, you'll have to pay for higher quality - again doesn't matter if it's a PC or Mac - I've re-iterated that point several times. I've purposely avoided turning this into a PC versus Mac discussion, it's simply a cheap versus high quality. If you have no problem with cheap laptops, what is your complaint? That cheap laptops break more?

avatar33 stop being an evasive bitch and explain why you need a laptop instead of a desktop? A desktop + an ipad and iphone should be enough for most people.

If you insist on a laptop, then what Ccarter says is completely correct. More expensive laptops use higher quality components. If you don't want to pay, then get a desktop.

Back in the 90s or whenever you claimed your parents bought your computer, it was probably a desktop anyway. Back then laptops were rare and not a product that would go on sale.

@CCarter, you just keep using the word "cheap" for the sake of arguing I guess. I'm done. Thanks for your input though.

@BCG jesus christ you're impatient. Why do you have to be so bitter all the time anyways? I have both a laptop and a desktop. I need both. End of story.

Clarification: I think Cccarter talks about Cheap as in 'lower end computers with high specs and low quality components'. You can get an older high end laptop with lower specs at the same price as a newer 'economy' laptop with higher specs but lower quality components. The older one with lower specs but high end components might seem 'expensive' next to the newer low specs economy model since they are in the same price range, but due to component quality, might last longer. Basically, a 2010 Corolla will last you longer than a chinese made 2014 equivalent, even if the Chinese equivalent will have better specs (like leather seats, big rims, bigger motor, etc)

Still, IMHO, the life expectancy of the laptop is more dependent on how you treat and maintain your equipment plus just plain dumb luck than anything.

Personally, I've had 2 laptops. Both were 'cheap'. One was a low end one that lasted 4 years and I gave it to my GF who has now had it for over 3 years. It overheats now-a-days every now and then, but still good enough for basic use from bed. My second laptop I got cheap and it is still going strong after almost 4 years. I don't really need to replace it, since I don't do much work on it, and I have an ipad+iphone.

Desktops I've had several. In general, I replace desktops for newer specs before the equipment dies. Desktops I spend more on, but nothing extravagant, since I don't need that much computing power on my desktop.

As a note, I will say many people over focus on desktop hardware specs, and not enough on components that have more effect on everyday use like a quality mouse, keyboard, headset, monitors, chair and desk.

Do you buy a desktop every two years too? Or is this a problem specifically related to your laptop? How often do you use the laptop vs the desktop?

The first reply actually should have ended the thread.

Some people are so dense. You could scream the answer to them, but they choose to willfully ignore it because for whatever reason the answer doesn't satisfy them; then they continue to seek a solution to their problem. In the end, they never find the solution to their problem.

OP is clearly such a person.

I have a few employees and I have bought a laptop for each of them. I can tell you that if u dont want to switch ur laptop and wants one that lasts really long then try THINKPAD. I have like 20-23 laptops here and each of those needed some troubleshooting but these thinkpad ones never met any problem.

I'm still working on a 2006 First Generation Mac Pro. Works like it's brand new and stomps the crap out of every other computer of all my IRL peeps.

The only issue with it now is everyone moving away from the Power PC support. Like, I can't upgrade to OSX Mavericks, which is killing me.

When I buy again, maybe later this year, just for fun, I'm going to get... DUN DUN DUNNN... the new Mac Pro.

I debated it as the cost of the parts in my rig are about the same as that of a brand new mac pro. I wound up going with parts as I do a lot of RamDisk based stuff and the 16gb upper limit isn't enough.

When you grab it let me know how it is!

Yeah, that one. It'll be late in this year. They aren't even shipping the orders they are selling now until March I think. I'm sure i'll be all giddy and make a thread about it when the time comes :)

OP stop being a moron and listen to people like this guy + Ccarter, mattseh, etc. For christ's sake, you had the answer given to you on the second post.
