How often do you keep in touch with your valuable contacts?

I'm talking about the ones you met at a conference or through any other means that you don't see on a regular basis but you know that they might be able to help you out later down the road.

Like for example, I met the VP of Advertising at CareerBuilder at Ad:Tech Chicago almost 3 years ago and we send each other an update of what we've been up to every 3-4 months
 


I try not to bother people as much as possible. Just make a lasting impression. If you see something that might help them out make sure you contact them about it. Other than that. MEH.
 
I often send off random emails to people I don't know or haven't seen in a while. Usually they don't respond and I put it down to way ward spam filters. But unfortunately every so often someone responds and I'm completely demoralized.

Seriously though, I don't like the idea of explicitly networking. But, no one I see regularly has no interest in Marketing/Business/Programming, so I seek out those that do because that's what I'm passionate about. Some follow my lead and send me random emails every so often, however most do not.
 
Aside from the immediate follow-up after a show, sending a note here and there to say hi helps too. It's cool when someone I met years ago resurfaces and we find ways to work together. Also, a quick IM just to say hi, without bugging them about what YOU want is a great way to keep in touch.
