On the firing line
Periodically you read a thread where someone (we'll say "Noob") is asking about getting into a certain niche (lets say "adult") and sooner or later someone says "Noob the adult market is too saturated" or "There's no money in it cuz...(insert lame response here)"

I've heard the same said about ringtones. "You got into ringtones too late"
And gambling "There used to be money in promoting gambling, but not anymore"

Often the naysayers are people that aren't involved in the niche they are putting down.

So, how saturated does a market have to get before it's no longer a viable niche?

Also, if you've heard that niche "whatever" is oversaturated, do you just give up on it and move on? Or do you go out and do your own research? If you do your own research, what are you looking at or how did you conduct that research?

everything is saturated, don't waiste your time doing anything other than zip submits! get out of this crap business now before you go broke and have to get a mac job!

Personally I only focus on "saturated" markets. That's where the money is, that's why they're saturated. Usually they are saturated with idiots who are making money. If you can't compete with idiots I'm not sure who else there is to compete with.

Okay, so maybe a better question would have been, how do you determine what niche you want to pursue?

Surely you ask questions and people's opinions. What attracts you to niche A over niche B?

there is a complex formula, you have to take the number of listings on google and yahoo, ad them together then multiply by 3.14 divided by 7 then add the number of days you are alive, if the number is greater than 400 you are in a saturated niche. or you could use standard d? lol

LOL!! You're in rare form today chris! Lovin' it!

But what if you add in the LSI average of the monopolized TLD's of the business segment of Uganda? Hmmm....

saturated

The best niches are saturated for a reason. Try it and see if it works for you. The best thing about the internet is that your startup costs are very low.

You mentioned the adult market so I will constrain my comment to just that industry. When I am looking at a new area, I don't worry about how over saturated it is if I can do it better, promote it differently or exploit a small micro market within that niche that others have failed to identify. If I can do one of those three things I will give it a shot, if I can't I move on to greener pastures. But I have to tell you there are very few markets that I have passed on, there is always a better way or a piece of that particular pie that hassn't been run dry yet, you just have to think outside of the box. And if you are going to work the adult industry, you better get used to thinking outside of the box, the cometition is rough.

Excellent points. Shoot me a pm twist, I'd like to know what sponsor you represent, and maybe sign up if I'm not already an affiliate.
