How To Access Shared Data from Different Computers / Locations ? Help !?



You need Vpn, this way you can connect to all resources at your home network from any computer you have VPN client (free download from cisco website) installed or Iphone for that matter (it has build in Vpn client) Now vpn is not as complicated as it sounds nor is it that expensive. You can pick up decent Cisco Vpn appliance for < $100 on ebay, and no monthly , yearly costs ivolved (no rebills :)). Now , you don't have static IP, so yes you will have to use dyndns or silmilar, which is really not complicated. The way you organize your storage at home does not really matter.
Put raid controller in your PC, and share drive, buy network storage device, (just don't attach external usb dive :)) it is up to you.

I can't believe no one has mentioned BuffaloNAS yet. It rocks. Plus you get RAID with it.

If you are just looking to be able to access files from anywhere then I highly recommend a BuffaloNAS device.

I have the 2 TB (yes, that's correct) model running in RAID 0 configuration. Essentially the drive has everything duplicated on separate hard drives so if one goes bad you do not lose data. You can get larger devices running up to 6TB I think.

The best part is that you can map drives to it locally like a file server AND access it over the internet by going to www.buffalonas.com and entering your unique key you setup when you set up the device. You can also set up multiple keys so your friends can be "read only" and you can have full rights.

All that for under $300. Just google "Buffalo NAS" and thank me later.

Buffalo does p2p connection between Buffalo Nas and Buffallo Web, so you use their webinterface p2p client to acces your files thru your internet browser, and if i'm not mistaken he needs direct access to his files.

The above statements are correct. If that is a deal breaker for you then do something else.
 
Thanks for the lead with dropbox.com that combined with logmein.com free edition solves the need to pay for file transfer. Just login to your computer at home drop the files into the dropbox and the are synchronized...

Mesh as well as Livesync are technologies to sync your folders on different machines. I don't know what OP wanted to do but if he has 1tb of files on NAS at home that he need to access remotely it will not work . He can't do that just because his laptop will not have 1tb of space... . Other then that it free and easy to use
