I didn't know where to put this question so I tossed it in here, if the mods have a better spot for it then please move it.

I was wondering how everyone else goes about finding a good solid brandable name that is keyword rich. I ask because I always struggle on this part and once again a new tool of mine is done but needs a name.

What I personally like to do is brainstorm some brandable domains and check to see if they are available using GoDaddy or some other register, from there I make sure that the name is somewhat relevant but still catchy to the tool/service.

After which I like to do some research on the keyword, I usually run it through a few keyword tools and then do some minor competition checking to verify how hard it might be to get a top ranking position for that term in under 1 months time.

Basically its gets to be a real sacrifice most of the time and I always end up taking forever to make a choice, this by far is a weak spot for me because I'm fucking picky I try to get one that is brandable, searchable, but already has people looking for it and it has to be in a low competition spot on Google so I can score #1, sometimes though I just say fuck it and choose one even if it doesn't get any searches.

So my question is how do you all choose your names, do you have a little system like mine or do you just think up something catchy, go with it even if it doesn't have any searches in Google and build your brand that way or do you spend a little bit of time doing some solid research before you decide.

Oh and one last thing I like finding domains like this that are between 6 and 12 characters long simply because any domain under 5 characters long is already taken but if its not its usually something real dumb, I find that its easier to get a 6 to 12 character domain, it also gives you slight flexibiliy on what your choosing.

its not as hard as you think.... brandable+keyword rich is pretty easy
for example... stock investing : whizinvestor.com or stockstacular.com

(kinda lame but not bad for 2 seconds)

whats hard is finding web2.0 ish short domains that are brandable and keyword rich....

if your main marketing will be from branding and you plan on making it a big site i say just go for a catchy short name...

dude, im just a noob, but i think your thinking wayyy too far into making a name. just make something simple and catchy. 2 words.

wifi hotspot locator site: wheres wifi
mobile porn site: wireless xxx

let me pull a few out of my ass...
car enthusiast site: car nuts, car freaks, gear heads (yah right), crazycardude,

i often take a main word, typically the niche, and then throw one (sometimes two) other descriptive words around it. rhyming and same beginning letter is a plus.

Here's what you do:
1. Determine if the tool does something good for you or something evil to your competitors
2. Think of an appropriate word (preferably a verb) depending on what the tool does. Example: if the tool does something evil, then "Bitch Slap" would be a cool name.
3. Once you've got a cool name, turn it into an acronym where every letter means something.

VIPER = Videofied Internet Progressive Eclectic Regurgitator could be the new name of ViScript for instance.

ACID = Assiduous Creator of Incidental Dross would be a good name for the next content generator

WOLF = Web or Link Follower for a spider script
or
WOLF = Warper of Legitimate Feeds for a blackhole feed script

Hmmm...there's gotta be more. Lessee you've got poisonous/dangerous animals, weapons, drugs...lots of good words to use to form acronyms from.

Anyone's free to use any of the above by the way.

what's helped me is the same tool that Nachoninja shared above but like you Aequitas I want a brandable name rather than just keyword rich so start by adding my own prefixes and suffixes to the list it generates.

Look at bottom of the advanced search page and you'll see a place where you can add your own affixes. If you're stuck on creating your own list, this will help:
Code:

I've never had much luck with DN generators. I usually just start by jotting down a few words that I like and relate roughly to the site. I type in different combinations and as I do I come up with more words to try.

You can also do things like making up your own words, or you can jump on the web 2.0 bandwagon and just remove vowels from your words like flickr. Buttmunchr.com probably isn't taken (and I'm not checking).

Domain hacks are also good. Domains like del.icio.us automatically get noticed because of their ingenious use of TLDs and subdomains. I've got big plans for .asia in this respect. :D
