Hello,

My site's traffic and revenue are down considerably in Google. Someone told me that my site was hit by a manual penalty but I don't know where they are getting this from.

I don't see any alert when I log into Webmaster Tools. Where could they be getting this from?

Thanks

Could be Panda, Penguin, or some other Google refresh/update. Don't know why someone would say it's a manual penalty, specially without getting any message in webmaster tools.

Could have been any number of things that caused the drop.

Try searching in Google with your URL followed by one of your main keywords, like this.

"Yourdomian.com your main keyword"

Usually what I find with a site that has a penalty, is that the home page with not show in position #1 for the main keyword. An internal page with rank higher instead.

a new site of mine was penalised "unnatural links" I had blasted a page with a gig off here... now, as it is only 1 page, I was wondering if I change the url for that page, will that get rid of the links... or will G still see them as pointed to the site?

If its a stupid question I appologise now :)

Apology accepted!

You need to do a full backlink audit, remove shitty links, and create a more natural link profile with lots of diverse anchor texts with a majority being non-commercial. Depending on how bad you fucked up the site it could 1-3 months for recovery.

How do you tell if your site got penalized?

Easy - you rank SEOMoz for "dog snuggies" and write about it on your SEO blog, then Google backtraces your websites and starts manually reviewing them and nuking each one

When your traffic falls so much to have to resort to blowing truckers to pay your hosting bill, that's when you know you've been penalized.

LOL.. I thought it couldnt be that simple...

The thing is sweepicker, there are hundreds of links it could take weeks to remove the shitty links and thats only the ones " I " perceive to be the offending links,

think Ill just wave bye bye to it and start afresh !!

Another question (hopefully not as stupid this time mx=headroom) .. once G spots an offending site with a G account attached to it.. does it view any other site from the same G account/authour as suspicious? or does it treat every site as a singular entity and value it on its own particular merits?

If you were in Google's shoes, what would you do? think about it.
