How To Get SEO Job?

Earn It??

Start a very simple site about how good you are at SEO. Rank it locally. Cold call the ever-loving shit out of your area in a 15 mile radius and ask them if they want what you got.

Gotta remember bro, you're a salesman, on and off the interwebz.

Fake it til ya make it.

Because I wouldn't feel right taking their money, without knowing 100% that I could do it. And I wouldn't know what kind of guarantee to give them. There's a guy who recently contacted me, from a site that I built for someone in the past, but I have no idea what to quote him or what kind of guarantee to make him. I would feel terrible if I quoted him too low or didn't follow through on the guarantee. Leads/phonecalls are all they care about. This guy runs a landscape website and wants to get to the top of the Gurgs.

Are you guys saying there's no way to get a SEO/PPC job, even at the ground level? How does anyone get experience, if they're not rich?

A low level job anywhere will not really offer the opportunity to telecommute

No idea what your strengths are. But if you want to get your first client, go do the following:

  1. Buy a domain name [brand/keyword] + [city name] such as PlanoCleanCarpets.com.
  2. Do a little research about carpet cleaning, and identify 15-20 different types of carpet cleaning services and DIY topics.
  3. Take your list to BST, TextBroker.com, or MechanicalTurk and find a content writer to author the topics.
  4. Build your web site using Wordpress and a free theme that doesn't look terribly like a blog (start here for free, or here for premium).
  5. Setup a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google + account with images and branding.
  6. Go over to HootSuite and schedule out 6-7 posts / status updates a week for 90 days for each of the social media accounts. Just look for relevant content worth sharing, and later incorporate the links to your content that is currently being written.
  7. Go buy a mailbox at a UPS location (cost varies based on location and size of box). You'll need this for the next step.
  8. Register for a Google Places page using your UPS mailbox.* Wait a week for your Google postcard to arrive. Confirm your Places page.
  9. Go check out Le Project or buy some of those Layered Links and point them at your web property and social media accounts.
  10. Goto Fiverr and stock up on 150-200 Facebook likes and Twitter followers.
  11. When you have your content ready, post the majority of it on your web site. Save 5-6 articles to drip-post them over the course of the next 4 weeks.
  12. Signup for a Callfire account, and buy a local phone number for the Plano area. Forward all calls to your phone of choice.
  13. Setup your analytics tool(s) of choice, and wait a few weeks.
By the 30 day mark, you should start to see some indicators that people are finding your site for Plano carpet cleaning services. If not, you chose a sparsely populated area or dicked something else up, in which case fix it (and do some research on the city you're trying to market to).

By the 60 day mark, you should get a few phone calls, just enough to make you remember you have the web site up. Give those leads to a few local carpet cleaning companies. For free. See what happens with the relationship. But build the relationship.

If things work out, entertain the idea of renting the web site out to them for $400-$600/mo. (or higher, depending on the lead volume). Change the Callfire number to forward to their phones so you can track the leads.

Offer to build their reputation in other targeted areas for a similar deal. Rinse and repeat. This isn't a fire and forget operation though. If you start seeing revenue, reinvest it to make these web assets stronger. And don't be afraid to charge more or find other buyers once your properties become more valuable.

Good luck. There are quite a few ways to skin this horse. This is the one that has worked for me.

I work at a job I hate while I'm trying to build up enough $ to fund my own projects. But what I'd really like to be doing is SEO or PPC, while preferably getting paid simultaneously. I've studied it a lot, but I've never had the money to keep going. I'll invest a little, but inevitable fail. I feel like I know a lot about the fundamentals and could really solidify my knowledge with a little real-world experience.

How do I get a job with a SEO/PPC company with no experience? Preferably one where I could tele-commute? I realize it's a lot to ask, but I'm curious if you guys have any advice. I would really like to work in the SEO industry and learn more, maybe make just $400-500 a week while I try to get my own projects off the ground. I need to build up a $2,000 fund for a site/project that I'm pretty excited about. It's just very soul-crushing knowing that I'm months away at my current pace.

Any sincere replies would be greatly appreciated.

How to get a job with no experience?

Lie.

That's how I got my first SEO job, however in my case I only learnt the basics in that environment. I put in the time outside of work to really get to grips with it.
Something valuable you will take away from working in a SEO company is the front-end sales side of it. Charging companies truly ridiculous amounts of money for things you can buy on here for $20.

You don't need to go to a huge agency, but if you just want some space and a bit of financial security to expand your skillset then try it out.
Then you'll have the opportunity to test things and get creative on someone else's budget, and providing marketing is something you're passionate about, you'll make a concerted effort and get good, so it's win win for everybody.

Lots of companies (i.e. local finance comapnies) also have small inhouse SEO/web teams, which would be much easier for you to get involved in.
They're easy to rank for, and again you get the aforementioned benefits.

Good luck

Just a friendly little tip. Google is now collecting UPS and other mailbox addresses and are rejecting them for Place pages. I have confirmed this with a few UPS centers. I rented a mailbox and claimed it with places, each one was "rejected".

Good steps tho.

Thanks for the tip. I put an asterisk there, meaning to elaborate.

We had some fishy shit happen too. Primarily with residential addresses, which is apparently nothing new, but it was new to us. Heard this with UPS boxes, but haven't seen a negative result yet.

Here is the easiest way to accomplish your goal.

1. Find all of the following companies via google or w/e: Graphic Design, Advertising, Media Buyers, PR, Web Development, Programming, and Marketing. Stick to the small-medium size companies that have a good portfolio but you can tell haven't been around for years and years.

2. Call on them and get a sit-down meeting with them to discuss a "partnership". If you have trouble getting a meeting, just tell them you are looking for partners to outsource the work that you don't want to do.

3. Sell yourself and your SEO services and pitch them a white label service that they can make a lot of money with if they hook their client on SEO services. Pitch an easy 25%+ rev share on projects they white label. Almost every company I have pitched this usually has a few clients in mind for it during the meeting.

4. Offer them free reports on any clients they like and give them the warm and fuzzy that you don't want to deal with any clients up front and you want to let them keep full control.

5. If they give you a client to do a report on, knock the report out of the park and get it back to them same-day and offer them support if they need help selling it to the client.

6. Profit.

This works incredible well if you put in the work. This is my strategy when I'm not working on other projects and looking to pick up client work with out dealing directly with clients.

If you are serious about it, you can call me and I can give you pointers.

You get an SEO job by applying for it.

It is actually one of the easier jobs to get as there are no qualifications or masters in it.

What SEO companies look for are smart, young and it savvy people. Doesn't matter much what your education is but it helps if you're good at math and analytical thinking.

I got hired at the job interview which was pretty cool. All I had to show was some previous experience working in the mutual funds business and having done some excel work, plus an unfinished bachelors degree (still unfinished lol).

I also had some failed affiliate marketing experience, so sounds like you're in the same position as I was.

SEO is a field where you can quickly rise in a company. You'll know a lot within a year provided you work with someone who actually know what they're doing which is becoming more scarce as the usual fraudsters and social media/webdesign people try to branch out.

Go on a job listing site and find a position or write a proper application without one. Of course, that is assuming you actually are a hardworking, smart individual.

OTOH, you can get Adwords certifications (Fundamental, Advanced, Analytics) and apply for PPC job. The certification cost is cheap, it is around 50 bucks. So you'd need to spend like 150 bucks to get all of them provided that you're smart enough to pass them on the first try.

I'd think it is easier to get onto PPC companies once you get those certs.

Adwords is for girls seriously, both companies I've worked at, primarily hired young women to do PPC. There are far more people able to do PPC than can do SEO, because SEO is a technical field. It's much better to be an SEO for job opportunity.

So when they call to confirm if your address is a physical address, can't you just tell them it's a mailing address only, and they just won't display an address?

If you are trying to rank Local by associating your site with Places you should always check the box where it says "customers visit me at my location" Verification is done by mail. Google has a database somewhere of all the UPS/mailbox stores in the US. Can't get away with that any more. If you say it's a mailing address you won't show up in the map listings for a search. Basically you are telling them you don't want anyone to go to that address right? So they won't put you in the map listing section of the SERP.

You should know that if your Places listing gets flagged for review then you can have a hard time ever getting it live. I have a buddy, not IM saavy just a business guy that had his bicycle repair shop listing flagged and he gave up after 2 years of talking to Google support in India.

Not all queries/kinds of local businesses can get a places listing anyways. Classic example are locksmiths.

Yah a previous client used his home address for his service-based business and was recently flagged. Time to revisit some of our local listings practices.

Depending on the SERP sometimes it makes sense to NOT get it listed with places. Especially in the case of a business that has a physical address in one city but also services other local cities... I find that especially in the last year if you are ranking high for that city and you have Places, Google seems to strongly associate that business with just that one city and it's tougher to rank for multiple unless you have separate locations with their own places listings too.

You used to be able to get away with separate location specific landing pages but now if the SERP is competitive and you have a places listing an are ranking high in anther city it seems to be a disadvantage. Local is changing.

learn to do seo on your own and start consulting for local businesses.

trust me, you'll make far more income this way and work your way towards financial freedom.
