How to monetize a desktop install?

Does anyone have suggestions on how to monetize a freeware application?
I'd prefer something low profile instead of a bunch of pop-up ads.
Seems like there could be some data mining opportunities, but I'm not sure what.
Perhaps logging type-in domains that do not resolve for domain mining.
Or maybe create a custom 404 page with ads on it... even thats kind of annoying though.

Unless you explicity tell them that you're going to be collecting data, what data you'll be collecting and what you'll be doing with it, you could get into huge trouble.

Sell it as a package that has bundled tech support.

You'll occasionally have to answer some really stupid questions, but that's about it. Technically, the software is still free, and you're just pre-emptively charging people for tech support credit.

Build a banner spot into your app, that when clicked opens a new browser window. Have it connect to your web server to download new banners and links

If it's something people will frequently use, let it run as a freeware app for 10 days or whatever. When it expires, make a disclaimer that says 'if you want to keep using it you will get a popup every hour' or something, or give them an option to pay for the software with no popups. Most users would probably just click 'ok, continue freeware version' without reading the terms. The ones who do read it might pay. Since they gave permission you did nothing wrong (i think).
