HTC Hero or the Palm Pre?

Definitely the HTC Hero. Although I'm not sure Android has a decent remote desktop app at the moment, if that's one of your requirements.

:R:

palm is played out. The pre was their last ditch effort to save their brand after all the failures of the past. The pre would have never come into existence had they not received a HUGE injection of capitol from investors.

HTC handset has android - and there will be many more people dev'ing for android than the palm os. So, that's a plus for that handset.

If you really wann be baller - get a fuckin Motorolla Razr. Those handsets are amazing.

i havent played with the hero all that much, and i love the Pre. ( I am a 3GS user)

But you gotta think about how long the pre might last. if not enough people buy them it will be abandoned, and you'll be stuck with an expensive brick.

Hero for sure.
I have the G1, and android is a beast of a mobile OS. Blows away iPhone software and WM6.5, IMO. The app store is definitely better than the pre, and consider this: By then end of 2009, every US carrier will have at least 2 Android handsets. By Q2 2010, probably 5-10 per carrier, judging by the leaked roadmaps from carriers. How will any other app store compete with that kind of market penetration?

Android 1.0 software was released in maybe December, 'Cupcake' 1.5 rolled out nationwide to G1s in June/July [added multitouch, on screen keyboard, maps updates and more], and 'Donut' (they're not calling it 2.0, but still a major upgrade) is due by Christmas. Steady upgrades and ongoing, innovative development are just a few benefits of an 'open platform' supported by a huge community and Big G. And, if you want to upgrade to Donut right now, you can [with the proper know-how]. Google loves developers, Palm tries to shut them out.

Literally my only complaint about the G1 is the shitty case, and the Hero addresses that with a slick teflon plastic coating that doesn't scratch or pick up dirt.

Fuck it Lee, you talked me into it. I was pretty set on getting the Pre but you made a damn good argument. There's no way the Pre will ever compete with Android on the app-level.
My buddy who runs a T-Mobile store said they're getting the Hero sometime this month, I guess I'll just wait it out.

On the topic of the HTC Hero - anyone happen to know what networks carry the best mobile phone offers in the US? Got plenty for the UK market, but none for the US market.

:R:

what network is the hero on? my buddy has a pre and loves it, i was thinking about signing up with sprint just to use it for the data since its supposedly so much faster

Only T-Mo carries it, but you can get one off ebay and take it elsewhere. Right now, if you get a GSM version of the Hero, you can unlock it for any GSM network. There is no CDMA version of the Hero yet, meaning no Sprint or Verizon.
However, this says Hero is coming to Sprint (e.g. a CDMA hardware revision) soon:

if you get a gsm version will it be able to use the at&t 3g bands? i have a gsm touch diamond and you can't use it with anything but edge

I was a huge Android fanboi but after actually using one vs. the Pre, I opted to go with the Pre. It's innovative and nicely done. I love my Pre. They're rolling out some nice updates too. Considering Android is just now getting multitouch support (officially), I wouldn't expect a lot in the near future
