I <3 Google Voice

I already use the google voice app, when I started the thread, I had GV setup to automatically make phone calls thru GV whenever the number is an international call. Also if someone calls me via google voice, it will actually prompt me when I answer, with the person speaking their name before I decide to take the call.

The best way to describe it, is like making a call using a phone card (ie: dialing to the main service number, then giving them a phone number to connect you to) except in this case, its all done automatically by the google voice app on my android phone, all I gota do is just dial an international number and GV takes care of the rest.

if you're not using a prepaid cell phone you can even punch in an IMEI code into your phone so that any missed calls gets forwarded to your google voicemail account instead of your phone provider's voicemail, which means you can get the voicemails transcribed or picked up from any phone or device setup with your GV account.

but does that use data or minutes? cause from what I understand is GV uses your voice connection / minutes, instead of VOIP..

For calls, thats correct it uses your usual voice line. Thus why I only use it for international calls. Cuz even though calling UK over Google Voice uses your voice line, your carrier sees it no differently than making a toll free call within the US, as opposed to being charged 1.50/minute by T-Mobile when not using GV. So obviously I'd rather pay 2 cents a minute instead of 1.50, and as I said before, its almost the same thing as buying an international phone card ,and then dialing the 800 number into a pay phone or your landline, except the GV app does all that for you.

SMS and voicemails are somewhat VOIP cuz they come in over the data line from GV's servers.

Now via the PC, it's VOIP. But via your phone its using your voice line but at a rate no different than a local toll-free US call.

If you want something like pure VIOP on your android phone you'd need to get something like a SIP2SIP provider, and configure it thru the Sipdroid application. I know some people who do that and only have data plans on their phones.

I've been looking for an invite for a loooooong time lol

If someone has one theyd like to send my way, I'd appreciate it.
