I am "severely" vitamin D deficient...

get sun in the summer, and take vitamin d in the winter, also you CAN take too much vitamin D with side effects, so start around 5k a day and then go up.

I recommend getting tests like that every so often. Supplements are one thing, but there are other reasons. I went over 8 years between doctor visits for a lot of reasons, but I don't think it was a good idea. I told them to go ahead and test everything they could. Turns out I am in pretty much perfect health despite living an unhealthy lifestyle. Doctor is also pretty good as he diagnosed something very minor that I thought was something else and never would've self-disgnosed.

Also, if you are too "busy" to go outside for a few minutes every day ( additional things apply here, like exercise, spending time with loved ones, preparing/eating meals, hobbies, etc) because you are that obsessed with time being money ( which it really isn't if you are self-owned and know what you are doing), your life is pretty fucked up, IMHO.

Well that's sad as fuck! What's the point of making loads of money if your a complete fucking looser ... go outside, simple.

The fact that you live in Australia and have this is 100x worse, go and surf.

There's goons like this is on my university classes that physically love linux, have the latest ubuntu and wear avatar t-shirts ... sort your lives out ..

Requested the doctor do a blood test and check everything including vitamin D... everything was fine except for vitamin D.

Okay for everyone who doesn't know, basically vitamin D is produced in your skin upon exposure to UV light (the sun). If you don't get a lot of sun, or you avoid the sun due to a lifetime of government campaigns about the danger of skin cancer and the merits of wearing a hat, covering up and wearing sunscreen all the time, chances are you are below normal.

I was told the reference range is 60-160 nmol\L (the USA uses a different unit), my level is less than 20. The doc has told me to start taking vit D supplements. It will be interesting to see how much I improve once I get it back to normal, because I generally feel like shit every day with a sore neck, the feeling that I need a massage really badly, general lack of motivation, creaky knees and a variety of non-specific symptoms that are all apparently linked to vitamin D deficiency. Osteomalacia is the main thing that happens in deficient people, it is the softening of your bones, not really going to notice this, it just happens without you knowing. If I was slightly below normal it would be a different story, but mine is dangerously low... so I am expecting major improvements over the next few months.

So for all you geeks who sit inside playing around with your computation machines all day, go get yourself checked... the future is not bright for people with long term vitamin D deficiency. Since I live in Australia I didn't have to pay for the doctor visits or the blood tests, but you Americans probably have to... it's worth it.

Dude - its wierd but some of the symtoms you said - i got. the neck thingy that i always feel like a massage , and other stuff like that - and i do work from home and barely get sun - i need to check that if what you said is true i might be a happier person taking care of that.

Thanks a bunch, for your post might be really helpful. alot of people dont know that Sun is very important including me apparently.

Dude, if you lived in Australia you would know that ever since we were children there has been major campaigning about avoiding the sun, wearing sunscreen, covering up, wearing hats etc. My whole school life was spent wearing full wide brim hats that were mandatory during summer. It's not a matter of avoiding the sun because I'm a geek, I go out every day, but I wear sunblock and keep out of the sun when possible. I look at family members that have spent their lives working outdoors and their faces look like leather catcher mitts... something I'd like to avoid when I'm older. I'd rather pop a pill and stay out of the sun, we have the highest rates of skin cancer on the planet due to the strongest UV rays on the planet.

Here are some examples of what we constantly have on tv...

hmm fair enough I'll let you off, seems you get slightly more sun than us south of London ;)

Hey, I just had a crazy idea. If you have a house, put in some skylights. I just realized that I am getting the benefit of two big skylights right over me while I work.

Research has shown it's most healthy to take 20-50 micrograms per day if you're not getting enough sun exposure.
