Thats right after getting pissed with Microsoft yet again I said fuck this I'm going over to Linux (Since I've wanted to try it forever but never did) so I looked around and figured Ubuntu (Personal Desktop Version) was going to be the best fit for me.

So there I was formatting my hard drive scared as fuck that all my work programs and videos, and everything else was not going to work on Linux, because all I ever hear from others (mainly companies) is that Linux sucks, linux is gay, Ubuntu can't do shit, you can't play any games or programs on linux.

So not knowing 100% forsure what to expect I was a bit worried, well that was until I finished installing version 8.10 early morning yesterday and spend literally all day changing things.

I changed my entire desktop (Everything is 100% skinable and I made it look like the hackers terminal on die hard 4 haha but then I changed it to a little more of a google look).

And everything and I mean everything I was using on windows plus more not only works on linux but it works a lot better and a lot easier (I'm talking my apps, games, personal programs, ect.... all of it)

I was worried about the terminal and the code they use and whatever else but no more.

I honestly just wanted to say one thing with this thread and thats "FUCK YOU MICROSOFT" and "Hello Linux (Ubuntu)".

So much better...........................well lets hope I still feel the same way after I use it for several months.

Ohh and did I mention I got beryl with it also so I get all the pimp ass effects (PLUS A LOT MORE NOT SHOWN) in these few videos showing off Ubuntu.

That box he is moving around may look difficult to work with but seriously with Ubuntu you can have as many screens going at once as you want (Well I never tried more then 24).

Its fucking super easy and super quick to use, I swear I can run 50 programs all at once with ease when using the cube.

I should make a little video of my shit once I get to know everything better but still I just started and I can do twice as much now then I could on windows.

That looks pretty sweet. Is it really faster than XP? Can you run Microsoft apps on it (excel, word)?

Good to hear you made the move, been running ubuntu for a few months, and the only real reason I have windows is for playing poker online and other gaming (even though most games do work with WINE). I use linux for everything else.

Enjoy, it's a good OS. However, I prefer Mepis myself... even though I hardly ever use it anymore. For my day to day life I've excepted the fact that my trimmed down version of XP is stable as hell, runs fast on my hardware, and is compatible with almost everything out there.

btw, all the skinning and eye-candy can be done in XP as well with a hacked uxtheme.dll file.

Here's a few screenshots of my old XP and Mepis desktops (probably 1-2 years old now):

Yeah there is something called WINE (Wine Is Not An Emulator) which taps into the Windows based API which means that its not an emulator and its not really a virtual drive even though you can run windows in a virtual drive if you wanted too.

But WINE enables you to use microsoft apps (excel, word) play windows games like Spore, Colonize, Starcraft, WOW, it lets you use apps from adobe (photoshop cs2)

There are over 12,000 windows apps which WINE enables you to use very easily inside of the linux environment.

As for being faster so far yes it has been.

Ubuntu is fucking awful. I'm not sure what gay ass games you're playing (probably minesweeper) but they don't work nearly as well in linux. Nor do graphic design apps like photoshop, etc. Gimp blows. There are tons of bugs, hardware support is awful, and there are tons of situations where you'll need to do tedious workarounds that just aren't necessary in windows. Sorry but just because someone took some hot girls and put ubuntu logos next to them doesn't make it a viable desktop OS, which it is definately not.

Also, running windows apps under wine is much less efficient than just running them in xp.

Have fun trying to fit square pegs into round holes while we're just getting our shit done just so you can think you're on the cutting edge of technology.

Do you enjoy the taste of Bill Gate's jizz on the back of your throat, cakes?

j/k ...But you fuckers can all suck on my shiny, aluminum MAC.

I used to waste my time using linux. One day you just wake up and see that all you want the damn pc to do is finish some tasks painlessly. Its a tool. This debate is like discussing brands on grills.

haha the only issue I've had is that when using WINE and a custom theme for Ubuntu is that the windows based designs don't flow very nice, everything works fine but it doesn't look as good in ubuntu as it does in windows.

But thats not a big deal........

So far everything I use for work, entertainment, ect.... has a linux version thats just as good if not better then the windows versions.

Personally Linux for me is the right choice, its more for the developer then the Microsoft players who don't know how to program shit.

Yeah? Well I can argue with it. My grill has ran over countless naked angel chicks and left them in bloody piles on the interstate.

It's true that Linux isn't right for everyone, and I haven't done any hardcore gaming, I think I only every played Diablo II and it worked fine. It's not as easy to use as windows, like until you figure out how to mound external devices, but it has saved my ass, like last week when I accidentally bricked my computer and I was able to throw in a live disk and save all my files.

It's a better development enviroment IMHO. It easier to get LAMP going and it stays up to date. For most users, I'd say it's all they need anyways.
