Actually, Edison's approach was stealing Tesla and others' ideas and calling them his own, and marketing them better than the competition. So yeah, do that.

again, awesome post itchy. +rep.

1 question, i think you mentioned before that you use broad match keywords, how do you maintain the high CTR when you move them to new account, or do you just use exact match?

I only use exact match when i use the bid high strategy but it's really tedious dumping 10000s keywords in one account.

You mean, Tesla?
hahaha busted thats what you get learning off discovery channel instead of reading books.

i exact match the big keywords and also phrase match the same keywords in the same adgroup. i only use broad when i'm scaling out then move the winners over. i barely see much difference between the ctr on exact or phrase maybe a point here or there. if you got the ad right it generally works on most match variations (most of your competition is doing the same after all)*. you have to split the adgroups of course when you go wide. ads will not cross lateral markets within a niche. well i've never found a mulit purpose ad that maintains a high enough ctr anyway. i've never seen one when researching either.

* its been mentioned before but adding random numbers or letters after a search like "super dooper wuyi 532547" will reveal phrase match ads. keep refreshing them and they'll diminish down to the top CTR ads as well regardless of bid - thanks google :)

Excellent post. The best post of the day, probably.

I'm sure geekcognito is busy converting your post into his latest eBook - just kidding ;)

No, no. Hans Tessler was the one that actually did all the work. "Tesla" merely took the credit. The part that most people fail to mention is that Nikola Tesla was actually just a character that Edison created to hype up his inventions by adding a bit of drama (for publicity). TESLA is actually an acronym he created that stands for: Thomas Edison Sells Lights, Asshole

Some solid advice here, but a few things are missing.
Volk and others here on WF made some coin ripping others landers and campaigns etc etc, BUT, having a solid niche, and lander is only a part of the equation. Some big time affiliates are now down quite a bit, due to troubles getting traffic. Facebook and G are giving alot of people a run to get traffic lately.
Focus your time analyzing everything in the process, but really try (WORK!) and get volume traffic on the cheap. This will give you volume clicks to test with, tweak etc

Tesla..

You guys who lost >$1000 in the beginning, do you think you would have benefited if you'd have had more patience, waited and read more and absorbed more stuff from places like here and threads like this or do you think that losing the money to start with was really an inevitability?

Oh and let me reiterate the suggestion by sitpomk to read that thread by imagesandwords about creating good converting ads . Here's the link. It's fucking awesome.

Honestly, nope.

I do the same with sites on 1st page, print them, lay out in front of me and use 2 markers to select things I like and things I do not like, then combine my own version out of them.

The best would be actually copy the ads the led to those pages and print the ads on top of screenshots as well to see what the message in the ad was..

Printer helps a lot, I mean how much more stuff can you have on your (dual) monitors anyway at once???

Great post guys, definitely will help me and others looking for support.

Now away to make some changes :)

Really important advice i think i read on a blog somewhere:

When you're first starting out and you're worried about losing money, start with low priced items like email submits or dating. These cost less to make profitable. Tweaking and perfecting a campaign where you're bidding $0.15 and making $2.00 is going to be much easier to make profitable than a campaign where you're bidding $4 for a conversion of $30...

Good point on starting with lower paying campaigns. But keep in mind that with email/zip submits you'll probably get frustrated pretty soon because the conversion rates will fluctuate like crazy. On the other hand with submits you can learn the PPC game and not lose a lot of money. But don't expect to bank on it unless you have some super cheap source of traffic (which you probably don't if you are just starting out).

OP: good luck and keep going. As someone already mentioned, it takes only one successfull campaign and you'll get your lost thousands back!
