If you are seriously thinking about moving to Canada, buy this book: How to Move to Canada- a primer for Americans [ame="http://www.amazon.com/How-Move-Canada-Primer-Americans/dp/0312349866/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237938685&sr=8-1"]How to Move to Canada- a Primer for Americans[/ame] (not an affiliate link- Amazon Associates isn't even worth the time).

If you are simply looking for a way to be more creative with your finanaces, google around for "the five flags" and execute. A primer is available in Emergency [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Emergency-This-Book-Will-Save/dp/0060898771/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237938786&sr=1-1"]Emergency[/ame] by Neil Strauss.

FWIW- If you run your own business or are self-employed- once you add the cost of health insurance x yourself and whoever lives with you (wife, kids, or gf and potential kids) + the cost of social security and medicare... the difference between Canada and US taxes actually favors our neighbors to the north.

I second the vote to move to Australia. Why anyone would intentionally live in Canada is beyond me.
i'm 100% moving to BC next season for the skiing. just got back from a month-long tour of the kootenays and regret not moving there at the beginning of this season. the alps wish they were they kootenays.

the best skiing in the world 2 hours away in Whistler/Blackcomb
no, the best skiing in the world is in the interior of BC, 7 hours from vancouver and not lift-served. :)

Fascinating and timely thread. I'm dating someone in Ontario and we've even discussed the possibility of getting married. Some great resources linked to in this thread.
