If You Could Change WF What Would You Do?

I would rather see this go with rep based instead of post based. Doing it based on number of posts excludes people who don't post a lot but make high quality posts.

Yes, but participation has to be a factor. Additionally, we occasionally get a member here (such as "Apple-D") that neg-reps the hell out of people under various names, bringing their rep down almost as soon as they join. It's because of this that the reputation factor cannot always be trusted - especially with newer members. I think that it takes at least a few hundred posts to for a person to really get to be known in a community. Hell, I have almost 350 posts here and I still feel kind of "n00b-ish."

Get rid of the all the damn graphics and avatars. Just clutter. Get rid of the two sections that nobody is allowed into until they are ready to launch. Looks wierd having nothing there. Or at least hide them from members not allowed to enter. Get rid of the rep system. It's abused and not really worth anything. I know it's supposed to keep the dorks out of places they shouldn't go (eventually) but right now, it serves no purpose. If you don't want certain members to post in certain places, then assign them to a different group.

Crack down on the drama. Way too much of it. I don't post here very often anymore mainly because of that. Yeah, I am doing work, but I've also found less dramatic places to learn, and I mostly lurk there.

Just my two cents.

/edit/ and get rid of the huge sigs that most people have. Either clear them out altogether or limit it to one line of text and a link.

Okay..I'm glad to see lots of participation when it comes to improving the forum. i echo some of SEO_Mike thoughts above and a few other but maybe not as "extreme".

Sugggestions

1. Keeping threads in the right section. No arbi threads in traffic. No affiliate threads in email.
2. Hiding areas members don't have access to.
3. Moderater lounge (if there isn't one)
4. A clear cut list of bannable offenses.
5a. Most effective / informative posts for each section get archived and go to a "Classroom" area for that section.
5b. All classic posts/ threads for newbies gets archived into the newbies "must read" learning section.

As far as rep goes. If you get rep and attach rep or posts to entering special areas. You will ultimately create a a heirarchy that will never be satisified, become elite and increase more demands from you. When you don't respond they will revolt. It happens all the time guaranteed.

Additional sideffects 1. They always want to increase the limit. 2. They always want to make exceptions for their friends. 3. Rep wars 4. People will post "special" information somewhere else.

All of these happen all the time.

Making the forum pivate unless you join would be great as well.

On a side note I would suggest that you totally stop promoting the forum. Allow it to grow organically and without all of the hoopla and fuss. Better posters and better community genrally result. Good forums don't need "marketing" marketing. WickedFire will become it's own entity as soon as you stop lumping it in with all of the other sites, which essentially means stop talking about them. As long as you talk about them, you are comparing yourself to them. As long as you compare yourself you're in the same category.

All the "sensational" posts and topics are what brings all the newbies and the "give me your keywords" drones. If you cut all of that out and focus on pure, raw kick ass information that a 5yr old can understand, delivered in a wicked fashion that is guranteed to light a fire under our collective asses. The site will grow and stand alone.

I like WickedFire and I'm doing my best to make it my primary online community where I don't have ownership. thank you for opening up the forum to suggestions. Wish you the best as we move into Q2 2007

I am not Lee Dodd. I think I need to add that to my sig. I think as popular as Lee Dodd is whoever he is, that Jon would announce it. Are you the SEO_Mike that runs a mod_rewrite forum? I've been meaning to ask that.

Jon, be realistic, do you really need another project to take on?
Just finish what you already started, you've got enough promises as it is.

I come to WF for one reason: to learn.

I would love to see some "how to" articles.

be able to search WF threads by categories....ex: NSFW, BOOBS, PPC, REVIEWS, BLACKHAT, SEO, TOOLS, BOOBS......you get my drift!

I would kick Jon from the administrator team ;) Just kidding.

Anyway, i would suggest to add more sub-forums to learn more things and make more $$$.

Decide if you want a forum that can compete with others on a business/professional level or if you want to turn it into a kindergarten (that's the impression I am getting more and more). If one needs a place to swear and watch girls, go to a bar.

Move the "Shooting the Shit" forum to the bottom and increase the quality of the overall environment. Swearing and Porn and all that stuff - is that's how you want affiliate marketing, arbitrage, SEO, etc. associated with? For a while there was a lot of information here, but that is long gone. Motivate people to post more on target of what this forum is all about. I think the original idea was Internet Marketing? ;)

The private forums are a good idea. But maybe base it on either rep points and minimum post or allow your team to vote someone in. Some people have really good info but don't feel the need to post on every post just to see their name in lights.

In addition I'd reduce the top header size. A bit big to me.

Maybe have your mods or guides a little more active in deleting threads instead of just marking them spam.

Maybe tighten up some of the rules regarding posting links and sale items like they've tried over at DP (with mixed results, but I imagine better than nothing).

I overall like the site though and find it fairly informative. The branding and image is great as well although I'm personally more a black writing on white guy (has mostly to do with my eye sight).

I'm sticking around for a while and I've made this the first forum I check everyday.

I wouldn't create any more forum categories yet, some of them are ghost towns as it is.

no new ideas please.

just finish the ones you have been promising in the last big announcement (in which one promise was to stick to promises more often).

why should i spend more thoughts on improving wf, if the table is full of ideas already but they simply don't seem to make it into reality?

Why mess with success?

I think WF is great the way it is. Don't break the individual boards down into sub-sections. I love being able to go into a particular board and see a wide range of related topics. Breaking it down too much would decrease the overall usability and atmosphere of the site.

I also have to agree with a lot of my fellow WF users when it comes to opening up the loyalty section. Don't make it based on post count. Don't make it based on rep. Make it by invitation. Mods can use their discretion when inviting people into the private sections.

You're doing a great site running this site, Jon. This is the only forum I've ever joined and actually became an active member.

Remove icons above unless they are going to be used - Have Links for a WickedFire Widget for MAC and Vista for updates.

I agree with the invitation for premium areas. Maybe an invitation from a premium member and an approval from a mod.

The biggest thing is the follow through though. I've been real dissapointed by the lack of followthrough on the test case. And all it would take is for someone to come on and tell us what's going on.

So, the site's fine, you just need to finish what you get started on, or not start them to begin with.
