As the employment situation in the US worsens, the Internet is seeing an influx of "start-up" entrepreneurs.

2009 - 2010 will likely be a very active time for Internet growth.

Being actively involved in developing cutting-edge technology trends online, I wanted to take a moment to say something to the new arrivals, and some "veterans" who plan to create additional jobs (sites) on the web.

There are several rules that you should be aware of. If you follow these rules, you will be fine. You will be able to create online business, and you will be able to abide and gain stature online as time moves forward. I can only speak for myself when I say that, personally, I want to be in it for the long-haul. So far I have managed to have success since 1995.

RULE 1: COMPLIANCE
RUN from "black-hat" SEO proponents like your hair is on fire! FORGET EVERYTHING you have heard about "get rich quick" stories online. (they do happen, but they are the EXCEPTION)
Use the GOOGLE WEBMASTER GUIDELINES as your online BIBLE.

RULE 2: WHENEVER IN DOUBT - SEE RULE 1

RULE 3: AVOID GIMMICKS
When you build VERTICAL, COMPLIANT, and USEFUL websites, you can ignore TONS of the advice by "so-called" SEO experts. FORGET about trying to figure out an "ANGLE" or an "ADVANTAGE". DO THE RIGHT THINGS AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED ACCORDINGLY.

RULE 4: DEMAND VERIFIABLE PROOF FROM ANY "EXPERT" YOU HIRE!
If you are seriously committed to building an online business, you will be REQUIRED to outlay CASH, TIME, and mostly WORK. During this process you will undoubtedly spend money to get help along the way.
If you hire an "expert" in a given IT field, DEMAND that they show you THEIR RESULTS and level of accomplishment online.
For Example: If you are hiring someone who claims they are an SEO specialist, ask for their TOP 10 keyword phrases... then you can VERIFY where they rank in the SERP's. If they are truly an "expert" their site WILL BE kicking butt for their top 10 keywords in ALL major search engines.. NOT JUST GOOGLE!
If an "expert" can't show you the results they gained for themselves, what makes you think they can help you?

RULE 5: Create your content FRESH.. never Plagiarize or copy other content.

RULE 6: Be sure to instantiate the solid FUNDAMENTAL elements of a successful online business:

A. COMPLIANCE
B. VALUE - INTEGRITY
C. ORIGINALITY
D. CLEAN IP
E. MEMORABLE DOMAIN NAME
F. SOLID SYNDICATION STRATEGIES
G. VALUE - PRODUCTS - SERVICES

RULE 7: Instantiate applicable and valuable social media elements at your domain. (Keep the "end-user" as your primary focus.. provide them as much value as possible)

AND FINALLY.. A KICK-ASS PIECE OF ADVICE:

RULE 8: IF POSSIBLE, develop a WEB APPLICATION as opposed to a website or blog.
Many valuable web applications have a greater draw and purpose than conventional websites. In many cases, web applications are given a measure of value above that of a blog or typical website. (This is many times reflected in the SERP's)

In closing:
This list is NOT ALL INCLUSIVE, BUT... it shares several good points I wish someone would have taken the time to tell me when I was getting started.

Thank you for allowing me to share at this forum. If you would like to contact me, feel free. THE BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL!
Go out there and kick ass!

I didn't read it all, but it depressed me for some reason.

Please refrain from posting your crap in future and save me the need to slit my neck.

Hey LotsOfZeros... for your information I just sat here for almost an hour and posted this information.

Believe it or not, there are some of us out here who KNOW what we are doing and we aren't afraid to share our knowledge...

uh-oh ... I'm fucked then.

Also, if my experience is anything to go by, most of the influx of the newly unemployed will have starved to death before they get their head around the tools, let alone find a niche and plan and execute a strategy.

So here's a pic of Aria to enjoy:

it's coming back to me why I ceased involvement at forums in the past...

A) Learn to type faster

B) Stop thinking common knowledge needs to be reposted all over, and stop thinking you "know what you're doing" because you spent 5 minutes reading a mmo blog.

I have a site that ranks #1 in Yahoo for two keyword phrases like buy XXX and used XXX and according to Google Webmaster guidelines, the site is crap and not even worthy of being indexed.

Conversely, I have a site ranking #3 in Google for an keyword that defines an industry, just after wikipedia and about.com, that is beating out billion-dollar corporations. But it ranks nowhere in Yahoo.

Don't think it's possibleto rank consistently in the top ten across all 3 search engines. Or, the people that can do that sure hell aren't selling their services to newbies.

Ooops, the thread just went stupid. Sorry for trying to post an intelligent response.

dude give it up... with members like -Matt- out there you will be hard pressed to find intelligent people staying at this forum
