Is a college degree worth the cost?

It's funny how CA can't compete cost-wise with Canada. From what I've read, the average full professor makes about $125k. They also get huge pensions. Over 2000 have pensions over $100k/year. There are a lot of overpaid administrators and bureaucrats, too.
There are also a lot of bullshit degrees in the US, like black studies, Mexican studies, women studies, etc.

Most people in the US believe they have to go to college. That's the current propaganda. And because of that, many people unnecessarily burden themselves with huge amounts of debt. If the gov't stopped guaranteeing loans, at least prices would be lower. Sure, some people would still end up with worthless degrees but they would cost a lot less.
If you want to be an entrepreneur and you're really set out for the task, then you don't need to go to college.
So, a degree in women's studies or black studies is valuable? Lemme guess. Retarded?
Value is subjective. My parents sent me for testing aged 3, but the doctor didn't find anything :rainfro:

I have no idea, I never asked them. I do my own thing. I make more than most people my age, I have more freedom, shit is cash.

Just trying to make the point that most businesses will not value a degree in women's studies, etc. The only job those might have any value for are gov't jobs. I doubt a degree in Mexican studies would make you a better programmer. Liberals arts degrees from a rigorous college like Williams College have value but most liberal arts degrees don't come close to those from places like Williams.
Would I hire a designer or programmer who doesn't have a college degree and learned everything himself on teh Interwebz?

Would I want that surgery to be performed by someone without a degree and who learned everything himself on teh Interwebz?

So to answer the OP's question, it depends on the degree.
In some cases (when it comes to things like design/programming), obtaining a degree is pretty much pointless because learning everything yourself isn't all that complicated logistically speaking. If you have a computer and an Internet connection, you're good to go.
In other cases though, when it comes to doctors/pilots/whatever, things are a bit more complicated because you need access to very expensive devices, because it's much more important to learn from professionals (as a designer or programmer, you don't need to be in direct contact with the person you're learning from but as a surgeon... you get the point) and so on.

That's my thinking and that's the exact reason I dropped out. Don't regret it for a minute!
That is EXACTLY what a college degree is for most employers. College isn't for everyone or every profession. You want to be an engineer, a financial analyst or a doctor, go to fucking college. You want to be an author, a film producer, or an internet marketer, bust your ass the years you would be wasting in college. IMO college is most valuable to people that don't know what they want yet. It gives you a few structured years to figure out what you really want while also gaining a valuable "proof" of your work ethic and intelligence.
